You don't have to be a good musician to hear the difference. Listen to a live version of It's My Life and then the studio - you can hear the difference even though you aren't a musician. Maybe you can't tell if it was a key-change or what excactly it was, but they can hear it.

So in other words....

Nah!

Man, I tell you what, I’ll let you re-read the post I made before and then you can try and base your repudiation on it… that’s traditional in disagreements.

Of course, being Scandinavian and unleashing not only the majority of the worlds most arrogant bedroom guitarists but also the most heinous atrocities to music the past few decades I guess I’m probably on a loser trying to talk to you about anything remotely theory based.

Actually, any non-musicians that heard live or recorded renditions of IML would probably only be able to pick up that one was live and the other wasn't. This is about difference in key by a semi-tone which, to be honest, not even your average musician would be able to pick up unless he/she heard the tracks back to back.

So yeah.

My point was, that you necessarily not have to be a good musician with a good ear to hear the key-change. How can you have ear-training? You have to learn that yourself... If I played IML or any other song in the original key, and then change it - then you would be able to hear it! So nah, but of course it is hard to hear it when a non-musician or a musician just hear both versions after a while. And what do scandinavians have to do with this conversations?

Why do people keep on posting in the general forum insted of the music?

If you haven't heard about ear-training then I take it you've not really done any music theory... maybe this is why you are having trouble with the examples... never mind..

yes man, but only immediately afterwards if you played them back-to-back... I'll let you re-read the examples and work it out.

'nuff time wasted on this one

Try to define ear-training! Can you teach a person to be able to hear which notes that are being played? Just like that? That is something that comes with time... I have done a lot of music theory - maybe you haven't?

Well yes actually - it's called perfect pitch and isn't dependent on whether you are a good musician. It's a completely personal thing, albeit a very rare phenomenon. And yes, I have managed to teach myself pitch estimation to some extent. I know what an E sounds like and I can move up semi-tone by semi-tone in my head till I achieve the pitch of the audible note with some success I might add. That is also what prompted me to test the early live version of 'Runaway' and, lo and behold, it is played 'at pitch'.

Nothing will teach you or leave you with perfect pitch. You can only suggest some different ways to start listening to notes.

No, there is a big difference between hearing what tone it is, and hearing if the key gets lower or higher!
