notice that Richie isn't using a capo on the first fret as they do on all the other LMS performances. If I remember correctly this is one of the first shows where they played LMS and seems like they were just testing out the song in that particular key. Only confusion is...if they tune down half a step when playing this song live what is the point of using a capo? I'm assuming that they tune the actual guitar down a whole step and then just put the capo on the first thus making the guitar half a step lower. I would guess that they recorded the song the capo was used in original tuning and just left it live except tuned down the guitar itself which would not force richie to move up the finger positions.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me.
Wow, that sounds terrible.

once again, for the third time: I said they should do it in SOME songs, not all of them. LMS is a good example of misusing the technique of lowering down too much. they could have played it in the regular key or even just a half tone down. but dry county, always, these days... they could use a whole tone detune. and I stand by my opinion.

Can always be lowered anymore? I'm no expert, but it sounds like the verses are pretty damn low as they are...

i hope jon doesnt see this, in other words you want the band to sound shit, 'flat and boring' (words others used) to make jon look good???

no way

EDIT: plus jon will get even more lazy and could have a knock on effect on the next album

I beleive the only two songs they've done this for, not including LMS, were Bed of Roses and In These Arms. I don't know if I like the change or not.

The capo was then still put on the second fret. In Amsterdam however, his guitar was still tuned down a half step but with no capo, effectively making it tuned down a tone and a half. Obviously, because of the open D string in the riff, he had to change his fingering too. On the record with the capo on 2nd, the open D became the open E. Normal live LMS, half step tuned down with capo on 2nd, open D became an Eb; Amsterdam tuning, half step tuned down, no capo, open D became a C#.

So E on the record became a C# in Amsterdam, 3 semitones down. Shite.

I think Gav'll back me up on that setup. Won't you Gav

Dave
I agree and that performance of LMS does sound rank.

Can't say I've ever heard a version of BOR played anything other than a half step lower. Do you have a youtube link for where they have played it lower than a semitone down?

Whilst I can understand the logic behind a whole tone detune, the simplest solution is that Jon should just up his efforts a bit. I have no doubt that he could sing DC, Always or BOR well in a tour setting without it sounding forced or resorting to lowering the pitch of the song. I just honestly don't believe he puts everything into it that he could - his refusal to quit smoking is testament to that.

I'll see what I can find. It was around the time of 2002 they changed it, and it's since been changed back when they brought the electric version back this tour. Where the normal version starts with F, it starts with E. I'll look around. Pretty much any youtube vid of the song from 2002ish until 2007 has it.

From 05-07 didn't they just stick with the TLFR version?

Good point. So 2002 - 2004. And I was wrong, while it usually starts in Bb, it starts in A.

I'm actually impressed with the regular version of Always that has been in the set list I believe since the LH tour. Was never too fond of the acoustic version and it seemed to me that they did the acoustic live as an excuse to not having to deal with the difficult vocals on the regular version. Sounds like they went half a tone (step) down on Always. Is this the case on the Live from London dvd? It sounds to me that in London it was done in the original key.
