You have to laugh. Does he really believe his own bullshit?
I know it was used as the tag line for the article but if you read the article the full comment where this was used emerges and it makes more sense. He's talking about not selling out to the fads and fashions of the moment, not doing the 'flannel" thing in 92, or putiing a rapper on stage scratching records, basically he's proud that they have done it their own way .

Thank you!! that's exactly what he has meant. They have never followed trends, they never went for what is popular. When I listen to what is on the radio and then you listen to a Bon Jovi song, there is a huge difference. They just don't fit radio at the moment.

Thatīs how I see it, too. No matter if you take an 80īs BJ song, 90īs or 2000īs song, most people would instantly reckon them as Bon Jovi anyway. There is no Bon Jovi Goes Grunge -album. And theyīve been writing the IML-sort of songs for a decade now. They are doing their own thing.

For some reason, this made me think of Motley Crue. They were the another big band I used to listen to in the 80īs. I loved Theathre of Pain, Girls Girls Girls and Dr. Feelgood. And suddenly, after having released their 2 best albums, they fired Vince and gave us the self-titled grunge-oriented album. The album may have its moments and some consider it decent indeed but that was not the good old Motley for sure. At least not for me. Iīm glad These Days didnīt follow the same path. The critics butchered These Days and said it sounded just like Bon Jovi had always sounded.

Yeah, as much as Jon has irked me lately with his pissy attitude, I didn't take it as a bad thing. Repetitive they may have been, but selling out to fads and fashions, they have not.

The full quote goes:

"To be sure that I never sold out or sacrificed my art for commerce. We never had rappers when that was popular, or hung out with grunge guys, or tried to be a boyband. What Bon Jovi did, we did our way."

And that, in a way, does make sense. They are what they are.

Really?

It's just sad he says stuff like that without a hint of irony.
