I'm yet to find one that has put a song on an album they didn't write yet added their co-writingship to.
Google 'Angels + Ray Heffernan'. It's not uncommon for producers or artists to insist on a portion of the publishing royalty and a writing credit on songs they had little to nothing to do with if 'perceived authenticity' is their bag. The truth of most songs will never be known to anyone but the writers - and, lets face it, if JBJ (or similar) gives you a call and says he effectively wants to give you a cut of the publishing royalty on a multi-million selling album, chances are you'll let him put his name next to yours on the song he's after... small price to pay for the potential returns.

Having said that I have to agree on the IML thing... the lyrics are very 'Jovi.

Here is the original version of Ugly performed live by Eric Bazilian. Aside from a few different lyrics, it's the song we all know from the DA album.

The guitar line that was added by Jon is very similar to Tom Petty's song Mary Jane's Last Dance.

Jon's reaction to the question why he wrote Ugly.

Ugly was written by Eric Bazillian as U.G.L.Y., then finished by Jon. What's remarkable though is that at the time Eric wrote the song he added the story how he wrote it for his wife who was pregnant. When Jon was asked where he got the inspiration for Ugly he said it was, and I kid you not, Dorothea, who was pregnant. Eric hasn't been exactly positive about his experience with Jon and how Jon claims he wrote that stuff and has called Jon a liar once in an interview. Needless to say, unless they made up, the two of them are no longer friends.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan
I know that this is an old thread but I was doing a search through song topics and came across this. I remember the promotion during DA and not once did Jon say that this song was about Dorothea. In all the interviews that I saw and heard, he always said that the song was about Eric's wife who was pregnant at the time that this song was written. He never said it was about his own wife. All he did say was that it could be aimed to all pregnant women, who feel Ugly when they are pregnant and don't know how beautiful, they really are pregnant (his wife included) but he always made it clear that the song was written about Eric's wife and how she was feeling during pregnancy.

Seb on your first post on this thread you said there is a huge unknown story behind Crush and finishing the band... I´d very much like to hear it at some point.

So who wrote Open All Night and You Had Me From Hello (which has a lick that just screams RS, so I doubt it was all AC)? Or Postcards From The Wasteland? Or Breathe? Or We Can Dance?

There were tons of ballads written during that timeframe.

What I'm wondering the most about all of this - what decides whether Richie gets a credit or not? For most of the DC songs, even if they just scream THAT'S DC DOING WHAT HE DOES, he gets a credit. For some, he doesn't. Is it a matter of buying a share? Being in the same room when the band is working the song?

Yeah the DC question seems to remain a mystery, even after all these years. And to make things even more complicated, Richie collaborated on DC´s album.

There seems to be quite a lot of exaggeration going on in both camps. I´ve seen an interview in the 80´s where DC said "When it comes to the album New Jersey, I wrote four songs for them, and the same with Slippery." JB on the other hand keeps on talking about the pre-choruses.

Thank you for bringing this thread into the real world. "Secretly" stolen? If anything in the original post was even remotely provable, Jon would have long since been dragged into intellectual property court, or paid off/shut up the writers with a settlement.

Personally, I don't give a shit who wrote them. How many people think Sinead O'connor wrote nothing compares 2 u? About 10000 million, does the fact Prince wrote it make it any less of a good song? nein nein nein! Would it be any less of a good song if O'Connor had said she wrote it? Nein nein nein!

Hell, talking of Prince, thingy and Lisa wrote Purple Rain and he stole the music from his dad! Or at least that what the film 'says'
