But why doesn't he give his all in the studio? I get that singles nowadays need to be carefully thought around the vocals he can realistically deliver night after night for months, it has backfired in the past when they had to rework the new singles so his voice could survive through the tour. But what about the album cuts that nobody is ever going to hear live?

I strongly suspected that we wouldn't have vocals like Who Would Your Die For or Teardrop in a real album and I wasn't wrong. I understand why, but it surely wouldn't hurt him to sing with more passion in a couple of songs, it really makes a difference and I'm not even talking about high notes

On one hand, there's plenty recent examples of him going strong in the studio - hitting notes he's not able to do live: We Don't Run chorus, THINFS chorus, Pictures Of You outro, WWYDF (as you mentioned). On the other hand, that was a very fragmented video and I'm sure only the best vocal moments made it to TV. I think had they shown the whole songs (or all of Jon's singing) we'd be hearing a lot of bum notes.

his overall tone in this clip was better, in live performances he is never that loose and natural, he hit every note in this clip while in concerts nowdays his voice is sooo thin

For sure there's a big difference in hit one high note here and there and sing for almost 3 hours, 4 days in a week. But what I'm saying, is because I thought that Jon had completely lost his range and the power on his voice. But in the video, we can see that he still has it. So, it really needs, for example, sing bad name sound so bad? Or he not singing the chorus of THINFS on Ellen show. Were only two song, he could do an effort and goes for it, couldn't he?

Look, I'm not saying that Jon sounds bad live because he wants. Of course not. But I think that has more on this, than only "he got old" and "he smokes". Maybe I'm completely wrong, but that's my thought.
