These Days was an optimistic record as well, just more realistic optimism. They have dumbed down their message since then. Now, it's beginning to border on comical.

You're absolutely right, you can't argue with results. Sadly the results are the albums aren't selling. Did you see how quickly new songs were dropped from the setlist this past tour? They're becoming completely stagnant by re-writing the same type of song over and over.

No one is asking for a These Days but if you want to "live your life", you have to find another way to say it or people will stop caring.

The lyrics:

"Shout out for the restless and the lonely... Stand up and be proud, what about now..."

"For the faceless....the believer...for the faithful...and the teacher.."

I think I heard the second part right. The first part is from the CBS site.

"The albums aren't selling" because the record industry has changed and music isn't consumed the way it was in the past. They SHOULDN'T have dropped the new songs from the set list. Love's The Only Rule was terrific live, and songs like Broken Promiseland were never given a chance. I fault Jon more for being too conservative with his set list choices, than not making music that I like. I dig what they've done up until now including the latest records, and I bet I'll like the next project. Maybe that puts me in the minority here.

I've been a very staunch supporter of the 2000 forward era, the last thing I want is to come across as someone who doesn't like these songs. There are some I love, a lot I like, and a handful I'm meh about. But I'm at a point where I can't tell them apart anymore. I realized I didn't care for Born to Follow, Work for the Working Man, and Happy Now because they over saturated the subject matter in the last few years. Songs like Right Side of Wrong, Superman Tonight, and Novocaine still resonate with me because they're fresh subject matter. Even when a song is blindly optimistic does it have to be so in your face about it? Crying, dying, living, flying, stand up, shout it out, short radio friendly words.

But you're absolutely right, the albums aren't selling because the market changed. If the albums aren't selling and the songs are being dropped live, why bother writing the radio friendly track at all? If it's not going to be heard, it's a waste of time. People are going to go to the shows regardless, put out an album that really comes from the gut and heart. If no one is going to listen, give something worthwhile to the handful of hopefuls ready for something real.

Points taken. I just don't think he's writing to be radio-friendly, he's writing what he knows. It's his "thing." And I'm mostly ok with it. But I'm with you on steering clear of anything that ever again approaches Work For The Working Man. Disagree on Happy Now. Good song, loved it live (yes, even as the opener).

That was the most genuine interview I've seen from Jon in years. Of course there was some typical Soul Kitchen bits, but still - it was still almost refreshing to see an actual genuine interview. There seamed to be less cocky "I'm a CEO" and more... well... real person.

Well, my favourite songs from the band all have those sorts of themes:

I Believe, Keep The Faith, Something To Believe In, Reason To Believe.

It's actually what the do best. But so long as there's effort in it and not prayer number 3000 like we weren't born to follow.

Those lyrics sound pretty good to me, but I haven't heard the melody and with a lot of Jovi these days, the quality is going to come down to the final production.
