Finally someone mentions this point!!! I don't think smoking has a lot to do with it. I'm sure it doesn't help your voice but it wouldn't destroy it like everyone is trying to make out. Btw Freddie was nearly a chain smoker and his voice stayed strong.. even when he was dying.
Carli - you forgot Robbie Williams!

robbie williams is a good example....he still hits the high notes, and he smokes alot!

I like Robbie and think he is a great singer, and he does have a good voice despite the fact that he smokes...but he is only 30 years old.

I still maintain that in some cases it is that Jon has just **** up his voice, but that overall it is a lack of effort. When he wants to turn it on (which tends to be just a couple of mins per show: examples, KTF, Someday I'll Be Saturday Night during the 2003 tour), but most of the time he doesn't try to push himself. I always think of Jon's voice at its best with the image of him busking somewhere: Moscow, London etc singing Wanted with a husky voice. Those who say "Jon's voice is better cos he doesn't have to take steroids... yadayada" - most of you sound like you're quoting from interviews of Jon rather than giving your own opinion.

"Ramble on"
I personally think that putting that husky voice on has part to do with him fuucking it up. Jon has never had a strong voice (as Richie for example) and trying to put on a voice that isn't his is never good news. Since the early days he has always strained his voice and now it is taking it's toll, just look at Bono, the same thing has happened there. He's still a class singer and performer, it's just something we have to get used to

it's what i've said all along. he doesn't have the confidence nor inclination to go for the higher/more difficult notes. years ago he could get away with a cracked note or being slightly out of tune. nowadays, i suppose his fear of failure outweighs his desire to go for it. it's no wonder really with stage shows being more about the spectacle rather than performance.
