Finally someone mentions this point!!! I don't think smoking has a lot to do with it. I'm sure it doesn't help your voice but it wouldn't destroy it like everyone is trying to make out. Btw Freddie was nearly a chain smoker and his voice stayed strong.. even when he was dying.
