Playing Monday morning quarterback now you might have a different perspective on what they released 10 years ago, but it doesn't mean that at that moment in time it wasn't exactly what they wanted to release and were proud to release.
I don't think they're production line pop at all... they write what they write, with whom they write it and who they record it. If they're not pleased with their own creation, they're not gonna put it out there.
I cant agree with your comments Derek , Jon has said at times he has disagreed with certain choices of songs to release, to quote Jon he thought songs were crap, hes written a load of rubbish at times , every song writer does. Thank Go Ritchie argued with him over Living on a Prayer. Being a good song writer doesnt mean you can always produce great songs or know which ones to put into the charts. I think a lot of their Demos prove this as they are better than released songs, so I do think they take into account what is in the charts now. I want a vote for BJ.com to become the new pizza parlour.

You're choosing not to read my post. At any given moment in time, the band put out what they thought was the best they could do AT THAT TIME. If at a later date they want to call it crap, they can. Hindsight is 20/20 but you only gain that hindsight after the fact. I'm not denying that there are songs (hell, the whole 7800 album) that Jon doesn't like... NOW. There's lots of stuff I don't personally like. But when the band creates a song, it's what they can do at that time. And THAT's completely different argument than what it released to radio/tv, etc. I'm not saying once the band puts something out in the world they should forever consider it a classic... they do the best they can do at that point in their career and are proud of it at that time. You learn, you grow, you improve... and then you can look at your earlier work and make some judgements on it if you like.

The band DOES control what goes on an album. So, even if they have to please the record company at times with certain singles, they're still not going to put a song on a CD they don't believe in (except for She Don't Know Me which was part of compromise to get a deal). They may love something at the time and think it's crap later. Jon has said Something for the Pain is crap recently, but at the time he talked about how much they worked it and reworked it until they got it right.

A: I love to tease people like you, thats my hobby
