Obviously, as you get older, things like singing at the same level as you were in your younger days are harder to keep up with. And with the way Jon used to sing and hit some real high notes, if that's not practiced very often, especially when older, it's going to become extremely difficult to sing that way. And yes, the smoking has not helped either. At a younger age, those high notes definitely come more naturally, but as a person ages, a singer really has to give strong effort to hit the notes. And with Jon, it seems like as he realized those higher notes weren't an easy task to hit anymore, he pretty much stopped training his voice to go to that powerful level. It's like that with anything. I don't care how good you are at something, if you stop practicing it for a while, you're going to become rusty. And I think Jon's at the age where working to get the voice that he once had is just too much. Could he get his voice to the same level as before? I think he could. But, Jon and the band are such great entertainers that it's not really needed as much. Sure i'd love to hear Jon sing Always or Something to Believe In again as he once did. And as he may not be able to hit those high notes anymore, the notes he can hit sound extremely well and yes, he still possesses a powerful set of vocals.
There's a button on your keyboard with and <-| - mark on it. It's called "Enter". Press it every once in a while to make paragraph changes so Iceman could read your posts. Otherwise he won't stop bitching about it.

I had no problem reading your post, by the way. And, no, some notes that Jon hits don't sound great at all, and NO! "they" are not such good entertainers anymore. What is admirable still is that they give you a 3 hour show. Hat down for that!

Okay, I definitely wasn't clear at all at what I meant when I said they are great entertainers. I think that one of the big reasons Jon doesn't feel the need to practice his singing anymore or tuning up his singing is because they're seen as such great entertainers that just showing up and performing the way they are is good enough. There isn't that need for the extra push to reach those high notes or doing anything real spectacular if tickets are selling the way they are.

Now a big reason why I started to love Bon Jovi's music is because I love Jon's voice (well, not as much as I did back in the day). I wish he still had the same voice or worked on getting it that way. But I think he's just more content with where things are now. It's his life and like Frankie said, he'll do it his way.

His vocal chords have seen a lot of miles.

With that said, do I prefer JBJ's voice to 90% of everything else out there? Absolutely. Does he still put out very impressive vocal performances live? Yes. There's no doubt his voice improved over the past 5 years, and even songs he struggled with on the HAND tour (Dry County and KTF) got progressively better as they kept playing them. And all the gigs for Lost Highway so far, he's sounded fantastic.

So in short, I think JBJ still has a stellar voice. Is it as potent as it was during the 90's? No. But he's made up for it by being versatile. The long note at the end of MAM or the acoustic renditions of Prayer show where he can compensate for not being able to burst into falsettos.

Of course, the fact he was dumb enough to start smoking is a big blotch.
Good post. I agree with alot of your thoughts. As far as Jon's voice being "powerful" i think it depends on what one means by "powerful". I think he still performs with a lot of passion and that can create a "powerful" performance. Like you said obviously his voice has changed over the years and he is older now but the man can still sing the shit out of a song when he wants to.

(cue me on the big screen) JBJ: "How good have you been? Oh My God!" (laughs, more teasing) JBJ: "You want it huh, you want it huh? Blood on Blood just for you, the good girl in the front row? The all request hour, the girl in the front row has just asked for Blood on Blood, ok, Merry Christmas young lady!" Amazing <3

It might also be the fact that he is 45 and isn't remotely close to being 35 or 25 like he was with These Days and Slippery

Yeah, this really shouldn't be some baffling mystery.

I don`t think that the age is a factor in losing voice, an example is Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler, he born in 1948 and in 19993 he`s 45 years old, Jon`s age, and hear the Aerosmith album "Get a Grip", it was released in 1993 and he sing with powerfull voice and screaming like he`s 20 years old!!

Well, I'm 20 and they can both sing better than me ....

So just cos age doesn't affect some people's voice as much, doesn't necessarily ring true for everyone ....
