Default Jon & Southside Johnny - Clone

We all know who Jon's influences were while growing up. There was Bruce, SSJ, among many others... For those who don't know, Jon is a huge fan of SSJ. He wanted to be a "Juke" and even went on a mini tour with them back in the early 90's... I never realized how much Jon imitates this guy until I saw them live last night.

I've never been a big fan of SS. Even after seeing him live last night, I totally get why people in Jersey love him and the rest of the world can't be bothered. I will say, he does pack a nice crowd and takes over most of Asbury Park. Although I do think that half the people are there because they hope Bruce or Jon will show up.

Anyway, after watching this guy on stage last night, it was obvious that Jon steels 100% of this guys stage antics. I mean everything. From his body movements to the way he hold the mic. The dancing is the same. The corny fake acting that Jon and Bobby do when selecting a cover song. Back in the day when Jon was a real rock star, I didn't notice it as much. Jon just had the cool factor and everything he did was cool. But now that his is older with the shorter hair and his concerts are more staged, Jon is now SSJ covering Bon Jovi songs. lol.... Jon has also covered a lot of SSJ's songs during his JBJ and Friends shows.

I just had to post this because I still have this vision stuck in my head. If you are a Bon Jovi fan, I'd recommend seeing SSJ live just once.

I do give him Kudos. He puts on nice little show and has a decent Jersey following. The cons... His voice isn't that great, his songs really aren't all that great either. He has some decent ones (the ones covered by Jon) but then he talks through them all, something I can't stand. And finally he doesn't utilize his horn section enough.

The big one is "Were Having A Party" and the formula goes like this.... He starts it a cappella, the crowd joins in, then the horns take over, the song is finally where you want it, but then he breaks it down and starts talking, saying stupid shit, and the song never really re-evolves again....

SSJ makes it look so easy to become famous in Jersey. His voice isn't all that great so this is what you need.... Get a good backing band with a horn section, mix some good covers with your average originals, become friends with Jon and Bruce to develop your following, and just play everywhere locally. That's it!!!
