Default Jon Struggles to Sing?

I have been watching a few live Jovi performances on Youtube lately...mostly from Tokyo earlier this year, and its sometimes unbearable watching Jon struggle to sing.

In particular In These Arms where he cant reach the high notes and my blood pressure seems to rise as im watching him struggle on through the song(s)!

WHY?
Is this because he's getting old?
Or because he smokes (does he or not?)
Is it because its live?
Is it because his voice isnt/wasnt in shape?
Or perhaps he was singing in a higher pitch??

I dont know, but it sure doesnt sound the same as on the records.

That was a paticular bad part of the tour, his voice improved dramticly towards the end of the tour, try finding a clip from the european leg of the lost highway tour, his voice was much better.

Yeah i agree don't watch Tokyo, Jon really hit his stride vocally in Europe by all accounts.

That broadcast of the Tokyo show was terrible - find clips from Europe, as others have said already, and you'll be amazed with the difference in his voice.

Thierry's videos from Europe are great. Here's a link to his YT page -

His vocal struggles have been well documented on here...but there was definitely massive improvement in Europe. I'm gonna watch Theirry's videos now, I would listen to a full bootleg but they're all on the other computer. Some great stuff from those shows.

We actually started to notice the improvement part way through the main U.S. leg. Songs like Blood Money, Always and Hey God popped up, and we knew things were looking up.

Tokyo was one of the most painful things I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing.... especially since it was just before the Aussie tour! But his voice wasn't too bad here and definitely got even better after that. Check out some of the shows from 2nd North American leg and Europe onwards, it's hard to believe this was the same guy.

He has always had bad spells with his voice, during the 'Bounce' tour was bad at times.

I don't know the reason for the sudden change though, later in the tour he was singing songs that I never thought he would be able to sing ever again.

Maybe he put more effort into it, realising he could not get away with how bad it was in Toyo etc.

oh right, yh its interesting you all say pretty much the same. well im glad his voice isnt always like tokyo, so i will definitely look at some of the more recent shows.

do you think it just takes a while for his voice to 'warm up' and improve during tours? or maybe he had coaching??
