Yes, Jon was sick with the flu. Donny D. said so more than once at the end of the interview while thanking him for coming. You could tell from his body language and the color of his skin that he was ill. Secondly, the show WAS more about his endeavors outside of music. The AFL season opened last week... Bon Jovi's CD isn't coming out until May. Use some common sense about the timing of the interview. It this was May, they'd be focusing more on music instead of fouscing on it FIRST and then moving on. Music was not ignored, but there was not anything to say about it that hasn't been said before either. It wasn't the right time to go on and on about the new CD since it would be forgotten by the audience by the time it came out. Not discussing it in depth leaves the door open for Jon to go back and discuss it when it does come out. Given the nature of the program, the 4 segments with Jon would turn to politics eventually, but that didn't outweigh his talk of music (1st segment), football (last segment) or family (4th segment). Jon has a life outside of music. Just like Richie did interviews to plug his appearances on the Chris Isaak Show and American Dreams... music is not everything to these men, nor will it be all they focus on in interviews.

I can always count on you to carry the torch of optimism.

If you'd asked me in 1997, I'd be the first person to tell you that I believed Jon was going to run for office. But he comes across like his view of the idea has changed from one of optimism where a person can make a difference to viewing it as a game. It seems like the more he's seen the more he's realized that one person really can not make a difference. I think his own optimistic idealism has been shattered by the dirty poltics he's witnessed.

Then he should channel that into his music..it would make it much more engaging and interesting than trying to spew manufactured optimism when it is obviously not what he's feeling. It doesn't have to be completely negative...but it doesn't have to be blind optimism or "the world is falling apart but I my zoloft keeps me going."

It's things like what you mentioned that scare me. When will it be about the music again?

Didn't he say in an interview a while ago that this album would be less optimistic? I seem to remember him saying something about having always been an optimist but now we are going to see the chinks in his armour. Or something like that.
