Default Jons change in voice since the 90's........

Hey,

I know this has been discussed before but i just found this interesting.
Im 31, and when i lived at home with my parents its fair to say that music was usually blasting out my bedroom all over the house, this was mainly Bon Jovi or Guns N Roses, fortunately my parents liked both so was all good.
My Dad was more a GNR fan although he enjoyed BJ especially Jons singing, i used to put the live from Wembley cocert on all the time and run it through the stereo full volume.

Since moving out many years ago i don't think my Dad has heard BJ live, so i recently purchased the new MSG dvd, and knowing my parents have an HD wide screen etc etc i took it round with me to have a watch of it on there, now i know his voice is'nt what it used to be sadly, but after playing dry county, always, in these arms, my Dad said, what the hell has happened to his voice!?
It made me compare it more closely to how he used to sound in the 90's, when it was at its best, its as though he's completely lost the higher range of his voice now, the real power has gone, and it seemed to disappear fast.

How can that happen so quickly, i know he changed the singing style during Destination Anywhere, but his voice never returned after that, i was just watching a couple of 2001 versions of Something to Believe in, its painfull, where only 5 years prior he could nail it, i couldnt imagine him even singing it now, it just wouldnt be the same without the powerfull voice, makes you wonder how many of the most fantastic songs will never be perfomed again because of this.
I just wondered how its happened, surely it cant just be smoking, if it is that, he seems an intelligent guy and must recognise it, what do you think he thinks about his voice now, has he ever mentioned it?

One of the key sounds to the band is'nt there anymore, i know he's older but it just seems weird how it deteriorated so quickly.

It's pretty easy - he and his voice got older really quick after mr. Jon Bon Jovi started smoking back in 1995.

I know it's been said he started smoking on the set of Moonlight & Valentino but didn't he also smoke during the 80s?

Might be, but not because of it (only). And he had smoked before.

From what I have heard, he started back then, quit then started again simply because he 'likes it'.

Obviously he doesnt care one fig about his voice. Jon is an idiot if he doesnt see the damage he is doing.

Most likely it's the smoking but I guess we cannot be 100% sure.

It's definitely not age. You don't go from being arguably the worlds premier rock vocalist to being a mediocre singer so fast. And Jon im afraid to say now is a mediocre singer.

It's very sad and it has had a huge impact on the band plus the music. They have to now write more conservative songs because of it. Also live in every other way Bon Jovi is a great act; so it's such a shame that Jon can no longer pull his weight.

Lot's of people are in denial about this; you will find plenty of people who still claim he is an exceptional singer and that his voice has just changed but it is still great, that it's bound to change with age etc...

THe other thing that bugs me is that nobody ever EVER seems to ask Jon about this in interviews. I am really curious to hear Jon's own explanation for his vocal detirioration but it seems to be a taboo subject.

When it comes to smoking, we are talking about a life-long addiction. You start as a teenager and it´s not really a question of stopping and starting again at certain times. No way Jon started because he got bored waiting on the set of a movie. It lies deeper than that, it´s been there from the very beginning I´d say.

It's funny how singing and voice always get mixed up in these threads.
Jon's never been the world's premier rock vocalist, that spot probably belongs to Freddie Mercury forever.
He has been an ok to good singer in the 80s, but with an excellent voice (if not 200 shows into a tour). Today, he is a much better singer technically, but with a mediocre voice.
What I'm missing is the power, high notes and screaming - a Bon Jovi trademark until the mid 90s. It was part of the awesomeness, but apart from the voice not due to singing abilities.

I'm the only that see and heard that Jon Bon Jovi improve his performance since the Hand tour, and Lost Highway tour?.
