For my money, Bono has the best voice in rock. Still. He has his bad moments, but Jon has bad decades. I don't think anyone can objectively say that the singing on Crush/Bounce even holds a candle to the singing All That You Can't Leave Behind or How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb. Edge owns his own guitar tone. You can't say that about Richie.
For U2, music is a sacred sacrament. For Bon Jovi, it's something they enjoy and love but it feels equal part job. Because of that U2 will always be the better band.
I think it's an apples to oranges comparison. Bon Jovi is a party band. That's all they ever were. They simply became huge. U2, while having 'fun' songs, is certainly trying to do something different with their music.

Sorry, but most of that is rubbish. Both of those U2 albums you mentioned were elevator music. Like watching paint dry.
As for Bono's voice, I don't know what you've been listening to, but he can't hold a candle to Jon in that department. Jon's voice is different than it was in the 80's, but it's still good. Bono sounds awful now.
Edge and Richie - Won't even get into it. Edge couldn't hold Richie's guitar strap.
I agree, U2 is trying to do something with their music. They have this desperate need to be relevant, and therefore, change with every album. Hey, that's all cool and stuff, but that doesn't make them better. Personally, if I like a band, I'd prefer they stay the same. If U2 released a hip-hop record, I'm sure you'd have plenty of people praising them for their creativity.
If Bon Jovi were merely a party band (i.e. Poison), they wouldn't still be selling records and selling out tours. That's a part of their repetoire, but that's not all there is.
