After loving their first albums I though they were going on a slope that would get me to have the same opinion as you, but their last double album is truely great musically and diverse, you should really give it a try. Recently I saw them live on a great French tv music show (Taratata for those who know it, rated by many musicians as the best live music show in the world ) and they were very, very good, much to my surprise.
Sure they're into looks and fashion... just like Bon Jovi owe a large part of their commercial success to being pretty posers.
