I recall him saying he wrote the songs in a post Obama administration era but that by itself doesn't mean he wrote political songs. I've never heard Jon call any of his records political, they may have political undertones but not "overt" and that's the word you used. I just don't hear lyrics that are overtly political in as far as a political philosophy or platform in songs like Water, Room, Amen, Thieves, BWC, Pictures, Beautiful World, Fighter, etc.

Jon is not brave or deep enough in his songwriting to be overtly political, which is why he should stop making albums with politics in mind. He's not good at it and nobody cares anyway..
