Soundboard is a source, not a quality...

That's a good answer. But yeah, commercially released SBD recordings and bootleg SBD recordings are too different things. Usually official ones sound excellent and in some cases bootlegs too, but they might also vary a lot!

Take for example "Cincinnatti 1987":

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/bon-jo...-33d64c3d.html

That's one of the best concerts & recordings of SWW era and has been bootlegged a lot. This particular version is soundwise as good as it gets (and you should definitely pick it up for €4.99 if you can!):

https://www.discogs.com/Bon-Jovi-Dea...elease/3224778

But then there's this other pressing/version:

https://www.discogs.com/Bon-Jovi-Wil...elease/9416062

which is full of static & balance problems.

(Actually the latter was my first Jovi bootleg ever, got it when I was 11 and boy was I glad! )

Yeah, that was one of my first bootlegs, too (though a different pressing)

And yes, of course SBD is a source, not a quality. But unless someone used really shitty equipment to record it, the sound should still be pretty perfect, shouldn't it? After all, that's the sound that's going to the PA...

The problem with some of the sound is, most of the early stuff was converted from VHS so you get hisses and noises... that's why, for example, Chili 1990 sounds like shit...

Rio 1990 sounds like shit, Chile is actually pretty decent.

It depends on the analogue sources on which it was passed it on back in the day. Remember that it often spend multiple generations until it got digitalized by someone. Another point is with radio broadcasts, they didn't necessarily have to come directly from the SBD feed. Sometimes they got recorded by external microphones set up at the mixing desk to capture the audience as well. Technically, it's not a SBD source then, but you'd need to have an insanely good background knowledge on each single recording to determine that for sure. What also degraded the quality was the way some shows were recorded off the radio. There were tons of promo broadcasts from Jon's DA gigs and they all differ greatly in quality, mainly due to how someone recorded them.
I'm not too certain about TV broadcasts. I've always assumed that they came from the SBD feed, but then again there's Rio 1990 where the mix of Tokyo Road (B-side later on) was far superior to the one of the TV broadcast.

Should start comparing (if bootlegs of certain date exist) whether they overdubbed Alec's basslines on commercially released live b-sides...thinking of starting with Japan 1985...

I'd be very surprised if they'd have been bothered to replace Alec on live B-sides...

Actually its more than likely, he even did it for TV broadcast (article from 1991 RIP magazine):

AND Hugh can nail "live feel" bass tracks on one take....

This article explains a lot. There is some sync missing in "Tokyo Road" at 5:07. I always wonder what was goin' on out there...
