The problem of this album is that it is musically at best average. The structures of the most songs are very simple and beside a few exceptions there are no songs, where Sambora or any other band member can shine as a musician.
My favourite track is MAM.
MAM is maybe the best ballad they have ever done. At the same time the song is very intimate and powerful. The climax is great, the music maybe simple but very effective and the lyrics are beautiful. I really like the decision to make it the first single.
AOD and WLOL are good songs, too but nothing really spectecular. Let's rate them 8.5/10 and 7.5/10.
Then there are songs (TLN, OSC) I can hardly remember because they are so characterless.
Last there are couple of songs, which belong to the worst tracks they've ever released. LH is like WWBTF a song which annoys me to death. There nothing special about these songs - neither musically nor lyrically. ILTT was written to be a crowd pleaser but it never worked in the set and it never will (at least in europe).

Finally someone who shares my exact feelings about "Make A Memory".

I agree to the rest, except for "Lost Highway", I just like the song very much. Having said that, it shoudln't be played live too much anymore, especially since people say it doesn't sound right without the violin. "The Last Night" and "One Step Closer" are indeed characterless, a good way to describe it. An average album I enjoy listening to once in a while.

The downside with releasing that as first single is that it isn't reflecting the band's image as rock band (as far as they still have it)

Ballads just scores better, KISS knows, Pearl Jam knows, Bryan Adams knows and Bon Jovi know. Yet I pity it.

I salute you,

Maybe the title track should have been the first single, but I was totally happy with "Memory" as I loved it so much! And this way the best song of the album got the most attention.

And after the lead singles "It's My Life", "Everyday" and "Have A Nice Day" it was a real refreshment. I didn't see it as threatning their rock band image - that job is left to songs like "All About Loving You" or "Welcome To Wherever You Are". "Memory" was more like a mature singer/songwriter thing, not just some a cheesy ballad.

Ok, enough MaM-defending for one day!

What kind of teenagers have you been hanging around with?

I regularly see teenagers hanging around in the park, smoking and drinking while I love this town plays in the background.

I can't let him get away with that "Memory"-bashing, can I? Back me up here!

Ok, to be fair: Bruce has got some really cool songs. I never fully listened to "Working On A Dream", but "Outlaw Pete" was pretty good (and pretty long). No, I didn't fall asleep...

WOAD was made when they had a break from touring. Bruce's goal was to capture the energy the band had from getting off the stage on CD. I got to say, I don't like WOAD.

When you compare 'Magic' with 'WOAD', 'Magic' has more glow, a single atmosphere and stronger songs.

Back to topic. Why are you defending yourself against Oli ?

I salute you,
TS

I'm just defending "Make A Memory" while trying to be nice to everyone.

Thanks for the lecture. Listened to Bruce's Greatest Hits last year while cruising up to the north cape, a brilliant soundtrack.
