Default Lost Highway - The Song

Okay, so it's been 6 years since they released the album which, when I heard they were doing, I thought I'd hate but found something very rare in post 2000 Joviland. Some honest and sincere sounding songs (MAM and WLOL spring to mind). It was actually a decent album but I never got into the title track.

It's everything I hate about post 2000 Bon Jovi. Wannabe anthem with a 'get up off your knees, learn how to fly, you can do what you want' message that I absolutely abhor for its simplicity in songs like Born to Follow and What About Now. Lost Highway has every cliche in the book ('In my rear view mirror/my life it getting clearer', 'These trinkets once were treasure/Life changes like the weather' etc.). Christ I feel like a shower after just typing those lyrics out.

But I was driving along in my clapped out bucket of rust the other day listening to the last Greatest Hits Disc 2 (Who in the name of f**k decided Keep the Faith should be on the second disc????) and it came on and I can't stop listening to it.

What the hell is wrong with me?

I was never a fan of it at first, but over the years it has grown on me. A good song off a great album.Goes down great in a live setting as well. HEY HEY !

Back then, JBJ didnīt call it the best song he ever wrote for nothing!

For me itīs one of my least favourite BJ songs. The melody is catchy but when it comes to the lyrics I very much agree with RonJovi.

" In my life I've gotten to a place that I finally feel comfortable in my own shoes. I know who I am, I know what I have and haven't accomplished. That's what I'm saying when I sing the opening line “In my rearview mirror my life is getting clearer.” I'm not trying to keep up with the Joneses or impress New York glitterati anymore, what I'm singing is simple, this is who I am, this is what I do." - JBJ - New York Poster 2007

I think it's a nice song. May be a little overplayed, but it's still a pretty nice song. The bridge section is really cool.

Bon Jovi's best post-2000 song and easily in my top five favourite songs by the band. Great melody, cheesy lyrics, works well live and Jon clearly likes it.

Awesome.

It's not a bad song on record, decent enough chorus, lyrics are a little cheesy but not off putting and over the top like some on that album. I like the middle 8.

Unfortunately, as a live song it's dull as dishwater. A definite switch-off moment. Would be happy to never hear it live again.

Awful arrangement with the fake country instrumentation.

The song itself is not horrible, but it's among the worse of the post 2000 pure pop songs they wrote (Misunderstood and Say It Isn't So are better for example).

I think it's just OK. The country add-ons are tacky and bogus, an issue with basically every song on this album except Whole Lot of Leavin. The lyrics are Jovi granola and there's times in the song where Jon's voice dares me to sleep. But that said I don't mind hearing it. The chorus is strangely catchy and I really like the solo; it sorta reminds me of KTF's. The bridge is cool. I'll take it over WWBTF or anything off of WAN any day, any show, any tour.

Remember how this tour Jon was saving WWBTF for the near end of sets, like it was some huge reward to get there? UGH.

The video really fits it perfectly. I love the song and he whole cd. I sure hope they try something like this again....with Richie. More duets with female artists!!!!

(Yes, I was listening to a few today...Reba and Brooks and Dunn)
