Jon has already proved that he can write really good lyrics. The deepest and most personal JBJ lyrics are on the Destination album, and Jon wrote most of those songs alone.
However, if we compare most of the Bounce album with Destination, there's no denying that the lyrics on Bounce contain a lot of cliches. (BTW, I like the "Change, everybody feeling strange, never gonna be the same..." line.)

yeah, but I'd say this is a pretty poor example of Bon Jovi being cliched.....'You give love a bad name' is in itself a cliche, and then when you start to listen to the lyrics "you promised me heaven you put me through hell: You're very first kiss was your first kiss goodbye".... and numerous other songs.... Jon certainly does rank alongside Jagger and Dylan certainly!!! I'd also like to include myself in that list though.... bringing the world such songs as "Rock and Roll Train" "Ready To Rock" "We've Got Rock" "Rock and Roll's a Dyin Bread" "Long Haired Rockers".... (those are serious songs as well, e.g, one is a 15min piece of music, that is musically very difficult, and I think impressive)

although i kinda agree with the journalist i don't agree with you. we have to admit that jon is not a bad songwriter. the band is where it is today because of jon. and his two solo albums are not bad at all. maybe destination is more pop than it needs but it's still good. about blaze of glory all i can say is that it rocks both in music and lyrics.
i may not like jon's image and style as well as his obsession with those crappy ballads but we can't always bash him for everything.
what makes bon jovi a good band (and a perfect band during the past) is the chemistry between jon and richie. these two together can do (write) everything. i don't think that jon is better than richie or richie better than jon (i like them both the same) but we can't deny the fact that if you don't like jon then you don't like bon jovi. it's a whole different story to critisize some of his choices than being completely opposed to his music. you can't be a bon jovi fan if you're not a jon fan... neither you can be a bon jovi fan if you don't like richie.
(hm... do i make any sense here? )

I'd say that Jon is a great/one of the best songwritters when he's writting songs like on Slippery, or New Jersey, i.e powerful 80's style rock songs.... There's nobody better. However, like anybody who is at the top in one area, you can't be great at everything. Jon is for me a great 80's rock songwritter, but everything else is ok to poor. But that's just the same for everybody, you can't be great at everything..... And I'd say you're right, of cource there were colaborations, and Richie/Child are great writters, but Jon is the real 'star' as such..... Not to say he's more important, but it was his style that drove the band... I think if he'd have put together a different band, then Jon would have still materialised, because he had such a great tallent for writting these powerful rock songs. (this all sounded good in my head, I'm awear it's written very poorly, but it's late )

What is a Jon fan?

Also, I don't nessesarily think of myself as a Bon Jovi fan, but a fan of Bon Jovi's music. There's a difference, and I wouldn't consider myself a fan of Jon Bon Jovi. He's one of my influences, I think he was a great vocalist, increadible songwritter, but everything I like centres on the music..... I can see how you coudln't stick Jon Bon Jovi, hate his voice, but still like Bon Jovi's music, if you rate him as a songwritter, or as somebody who is able to surround himself with enough tallent to make himself a songwritter. I'm a fan of AC/DC's music, but I go through phases where I can't stand the vocalist, but I still like the music....

mike mcrock i agree. jon is a great songwriter and he knows how to write (at least) a decent song. the truth is that he has gone too commercial but he's still good.

when i was talking about (bon jovi's and jon's) fans i meant the music of course and nothing else. i don't care about jon's acting career or anything. i'm not going to follow him if he decides to leave the music in order to be an actor for example.

that's a funny article. Jon and Bryan are at the top of my list.

I don't care if his lyrics are cliche - at least he writes them and doesn't hire someone else to do it. I find only a small percentage of the bands/Jon's lyrics are cliches. He can write some pretty astounding phrases. Their music and melody has always surpassed the lyrical content. They are hook-writing geniuses. That's what made them who they are.

HELLO!!!!! who said that cliches are bad in rock music???? Cliches enhanse rock music, so the fact that Jon is the number 1 cliche writter should be taken as a possitive, not negative!!!

once again you steal my post!

Jon bon jovi and richie sambora are great song writters, both solo and in band (some songs better then others.). nowadays i don't think they are as good as they was, but still quite good. they are way to commercial nowadays, that is the problem.
these days album has some of the best lyrics i have heard, as well as keep the faith (the album).

bounce has some of the most ridicoulas lyrics i have heard, but also good lyrics (the distance...) so i think that jon and richie are like a sinusoid. up and down.

and finially I would like to say, bon jovi are far from the top of my list of cliche bands...

I agree Erik, These Days was their best album lyrically. A little depression and a thesaurus did them good.

Except for:

"I played the part of a broken heart up on the shelf".

Hate any line which refers to hearts on a shelf.

I like what this band comes up with when he doesn't know what to write, such as BOR and "My Guitar".

"door slams like a shutgun - brought you to your feet - it's just the wind that's blowing through those secrets that we keep" and "his ring is on your finger but my heart is in your hand". Incredible...it really paints the picture well.

it's my life
and it's now or never
i ain't gonna live forever
i just wanna live while i'm alive

the worst song of BJ's for cliches

i always remember hearing this for the first time in Tenerife in 1999 before it really had any radio play in the UK and thought : "it's not the BJ i know but at least it's a rock song of sorts"... then on 1st listen i thought Crush was ok, but then all the "where are the solos, guitar works, keyboards etc"... came in
