Wrong. The DVD players can read both formats, at least most of them can. It's either your TV that can't show it, or then you have a cheap DVD player that can't handle PAL - disks.

Wrong. It is my experience that most DVD players in countries who use NTSC cannot handle PAL DVD's. The DVD player usually displays a message saying it cannot read the signal

A PC DVD player should read it though...
I'm in Canada right now and can watch DVDs I brought from Europe on my PC with no problem.

Well, buddy. U clearly didn't think if PAL version will work over there now did ya? Like I said, everything isn't meant to work everywhere. But, like been said, it still should work in ur PC.

krb, you want to check your facts first. Many DVD players read both formats just as well. Actually, it's not a question of the DVD - player (actually many have the same DVD-drives as PC's) but the TV's. The cheaper DVD-players can't show PAL, but they can read it. And if you buy a better one, they play them without any hassle. It's the TV that usually is the problem.

But anyway, PC should play it fine, because it doesn't have the limitations of a TV.

I have checked my facts first hand in a few DVD players (including one very expensive Sony) since I live in a region 2, NTSC country, and I have many region 2 and a few region 0 PAL DVD's with me.

Have you? Or are you just applying what you know about European players and reversing it?

If you want I can give you a lecture on MPEG2-video and how it's used on the DVD's, but I don't think that's necessary. I haven't got any NTSC - DVD - players, but I've got a 3 PAL ones and I've tested many and they all play NTSC just fine. It's the TV's that have the problem with NTSC. I have no reason to presume that NTSC - players would have a different decoder. So I think the problem is with the TV's. It could be that some manufacturers have added a "safety" lock on their players to prevent PAL - disks ruining the TV sets, but the players have no problem READING the DVD, which is what you said. The DVD itself cannot be made unreadable, nor the video on it. The problem is with the DVD's encoder being locked or the TV not being able to show PAL -video.

Sorry to tell you but that is just bullshit. I don't want to give a lecture either. It's the same pricipal as vcr. Every tv can play as long as something is connected with a connecting compatible with the TV.
It's with the player. For example what do you do with VCR's when in Europe you want to play a NTSC-video. You'll buy a NTSC VCR and not a tv from the US. Like i did to see my NTSC video bootlegs.
Same the other way around.
The difference between a video & a dvd is that a video would play but can't read so you simply see nothing, although the tape is rolling. a dvd is digital and can't ''broadcast'' or read and gives the message.
I have two DVD player's with one i can with the other i can't. Both aren't cheap.
