My review of Bounce
Well,I decided to sit down and post my thoughts on Bounce,I wanted to wait a while after the initial excitement of having a new album died down!
I think Bounce is excellant. The more I listen to it,the more I want to listen to it. Although not as good as my two favorite albums,These Days and New Jersey,I think it is far superior to Crush. Personally,I was disappointed in Crush. In my opinion, they tried to cover too many bases (which I can understand after such a long break),and as a result the album was not as good as it could have been. To me it sounds more like a collection of songs put together for a complimation album than a studio album proper. I also think that a major difference between Crush and Bounce is that there is much more emotion in Bounce, more feeling. I think Crush lacked emotion and feeling....it doesnt stand anywhere near These Days,an album which has emotion packed into every note, every lyric.
After being disappointed in Crush,I approached Bounce slighty more apprehensive, not wanting to be disappointed again. I must say,I need'nt have bothered,as Bounce more than passes the test. It reminds me in parts of Keep the Faith and New Jersey, without trying to copy either.
It sounds fresh and is definitely a step forward in the musical growth of the band. I am also impressed with the production on this album.
However, there are some things which I think could have been done differently....firstly,I think a little more in the way of solos would have been welcome, without over doing it.though Richies guitar work is excellant on this album, plennty of power chords (a.k.a New jersey)!
I also think that open all night should not have made the album. If they wanted to finish with that kind of song,We can Dance or Breathe I think would have been a much better choice.
I'm now going to go through each song:
1.UNDIVIDED. This is a brilliant opening track, kinda reminds me of the opener on Keep the Faith,I believe. It tells us to come together as one and to be resiliant in the aftermath of 9/11,however can also be applied to your own personal life in the face of adversity: "I found courage.they could'nt ruin it,I found spirit in the smoke and dust". 10/10
2.EVERYDAY. The first single, which is an attention-grabber in the same vein as Its my Life. Maybe not as good as that song, but I think it loses something in the comparison. It stands on its own too feet as an vcry good song, with an updated sound courtesy of good guitar work by Richie.9/10
3.THE DISTANCE. On my first listen to the album,I expected a ballad to appear at this point. When I heard this I thought,"bloody hell, this is good!".I love the way Jon sings this;when he sings "the first snow is falling down",its countered by the warmth in his voice. After hearing it I thought it could have done with a guitar solo, but after seeing the version at the Shepards Bush gig,I dont need to worry. It's gonna be great live! Again, trademark Sambora riffs rip their way through the song. Should be a single. 10/10
4.JOEY. I've read a lot about peoples thoughts on this song. I really like it,theres so much emotion in it,and the harmonies between Jon and Richie are superb. You could say theres not enough guitar, but I dont think it needs it. The orchestration really fits th song, and I really hope to hear this in concert. 10/10
5.MISUNDERSTOOD. Again,I've read what people say about this song, and while I would maybe tend to agree that it should'nt be the second single,I think its actually quite a good song. Its certain to be a radio hit,and I like the lyrics. How many guys have been in that position?!
As a second single,I think its much superior to Crush's second single,Say it is'nt so,which I feel is a bit flat. 8/10
6.ALL ABOUT LOVING YOU. Ahh,here it is,the big ballad. Definitely not up ther with Always or Bed of Roses, but there is more emotion in chorus than there is in the whole of Thankyou for loving me. Not their best, but most certainly not their worst. 7/10
7.HOOK ME UP. This is really good song. Richie once again tears his way through the it,and the way Jon sings really adds to the urgency of the song. This will be excellant live. 9/10
8.RIGHT SIDE OF WRONG. When I first heard this,I thought "Did Jon lose this during the Blaze of Glory sessions, and only find it again this year?!". However, after a few more listens it grew on me. Jon sings it perfectly,on the whole I think the way he sings on this album is brilliant. It really adds to some of the songs, such as this one. Ok,he may not be able to hit the high notes on Prayer anymore, but he still has a quality voice! Richies swings in with a classic Sambora solo,I wondered where one would turn up! This a great song to listen too with a hangover....Jon sings it like he has one! 8/10
9.LOVE ME BACK TO LIFE. An alright song, a bit too much like the Distance. The Talkbox is used well and on the whole a fine album filler. 7/10.
10.YOU HAD ME FROM HELLO. I did'nt like this song at first, but since it has really grown on me. It kinda reminds me of Bitter wine, which is'nt a bad thing! A bit cheesy, but that aint bad in small doses! I love the lyrics and harmonies in the second verse. 8/10
11.BOUNCE. The title track, and what a tune! It literally screams out of the speakers! Its compared to Its my Life and One Wild Night, but I think the production is much better here. Theres so much cramed in the song! This should definiteyl be released as a single, hopefully just as the tour starts! 10/10.
12.OPEN ALL NIGHT. The only song on the album I dont care much for. As Jovi ballads go,this is poor. As I said,We can dance or Breathe would have been better. In my opinion, they dont even need a ballad here,as we already have ABLU and YHMFH. Another reason to believe would have been a welcome inclusion. 6/10.
There you go,I hope I didnt bore you all too much, but I wanted to share my feelings with the rest of you. Feel free to comment....and remember, its all my opinion,so if you disagree dont take offence!
