Here is my take on that situation:
I don't think Jon intentionally went into this post 2K direction on purpose or because he is embarrassed of the 80's. I think he got caught up trying to change with the times and continually wants to try different things due to his current vocal state. I think he is trying to find that next big thing that fits him best. If Jon could still belt out songs like he once did, the albums would be much different. I have a feeling that Jon might be taking a step back and going in that old school direction for this new album.
I think there are songs on each album that still rock, like Bullet, but there is a lack of that overall rock guitar sound.
I don't think Jon is embarrassed of his 80's songs (there might have been a short window) but I do think he is of his 80's image. He wants to fit in with the old politicians and he wants to be far away from that 80's style.
Finally, the whole light FM thing doesn't mean anything. I know the billboard he is talking about and although it doesn't give a good impression, the light FM station doesn't mean light music. It basically just consists of hit rock songs that were popular a few years prior. Artist's older hits like Pink, Adele, Taylor Swift, Goo Goo Dolls, Etc.
