Probably because more and more ballads entered the sets from 1988 onwards and I'll Be There For You, Living In Sin (on the NJ tour) and Bed of Roses just got the better of it when it came to the ballad slots.
Furthermore, Richie once claimed in the early 90's that playing that song with 2 acoustic guitars at the end of a show was one of his favourite moments because it felt so sincere.
And I also think that playing the song in this way helped that it didn't come across too dated because it has a very distinct 80's sound.

Btw: The last time it probably was done in the original way was on the 2nd night of Wembley Arena shows in 1988 and even there they inserted an acoustic break in the middle and Jon avoided those high-pitched notes at the end.

That's a good point. Electric it just sounds so dated. Acoustic though it's broken down to a simple song, gutted they didn't do it for the acoustic mini sets on the 2006-2013 tours.

This performance has EVERYTHING this band stood for at their peak:
Between the Richie's haunting guitar playing, Jon's raw high notes on "rather die than fade away", the band's energy and the harmonica being used in the end, this is THE perfect performance of this song in my book!

I like the Johannerburg one but I like better the result of that These Days (live) on the European Hey God single, it's based on the Johannesburg one but it's not exactly... (I could explain it better in Spanish >_<)

anyway, my favorite These Days, Tampa 1995 in my book!

While I don't particularly like the song TD, you're perfectly right!

Though the quality is rather poor, these early Homebound Train performances were great:

Sounds amazing compared to the other available version... I'm sure you can predict my next question... Do you the entire show with this audio?
