Speaking of their solo albums: from time to time I find myself going back to Destination Anywhere. On most of the occasions it's when I'm reflecting about things a lot, in the autumn/winter time, on long car drives or when I'm simply not in a good shape physically.
I've listened to it a lot the last few days and, on any given moment, it's about the best music to me! The songwriting seems so sincere and really showcases Jon on top of his game in that field. Plus the sound (which someone here once described as muffled) of the album has something to it that captures me. To connect to the post above - it kind of feels like being taken back to a certain, more simplistic time and it lets your imagination run free.
For anyone who hasn't tried it yet - next time you have a long car drive through the night ahead of you, put that album on. It takes you on a ride like no other.

Destination Anywhere is my go-to long car ride album. I resonate deeply with everything you wrote there.

I adore that album. I think I listened to it during a time that I didn't care about it - one way or another. I wound up listening to the lyrics and was blown away. Learning How to Fall - I think Jon learned how to fall later than most of us do. In any case - I was hooked. I became a "sort of" Richie fan way later but that Destination Anywhere album really grabbed me.

Aloha !

Great discussion this. None of the points he makes make sense yet everyone's trying to convince him otherwise. It reminds me of a certain president this guy's voted for.

Thinny and Captain_Jovi are spot on. Grunge was there overnight. Besides of what's been said by them already there's plenty of examples as to how and why but I can't be arsed to share my wisdom as there's no one left willing to listen due to the idiot with his panties in a twist spreading constant unsubstantial anger and negativity on this board.

Spot on!
Just yesterday, on a 3 hour car drive back home, I listened to a whole lot of various music from various artists on my USB stick...and of course there were some Bon Jovi songs included.
While listening to I think In These Arms I had the same thought as you: The older songs had such a different songwriting. I got the feeling that with those songs during the writing process all that mattered was that song and that's why most of them were so good. That's what you call "sincere" and I think that describes it very well.
Most of todays songs just seem to be a means to an end. "Let's write a song and another one...alright that's a dozen, now we have an album to release."
Of course not all of the old stuff is gold and not all of the new stuff is crap...but new gems have become very very rare.

I was listening to This Ain't A Love Song yesterday but before that Devils In The Temple was on...

What a difference...Jon's voice was so clear and clean back then... He's got such a dry raspy vocal now... If him and Shanks spent more time working on vocals, I think most of the new stuff would sound so much better...

And what's up with that Guitar in the beginning of Devil... It doesn't sound real... Something is off... it sounds like something I could do on Audacity by cutting and pasting guitar parts...

That intro really is bizarre, starts the song off so badly. I personally think it's a pretty reasonable song when it gets going but the song really suffers for having such a boring start.
