As if it isn't already dead.

The thing with a setlist like that is though if the band would play the same 20 first songs, slap It's My Life and Prayer in the encore no one would give a shit about the songs they'd miss out on.

You'd get Helter Skelter, All I Want Is Everything, Something For The Pain, Rockin' All Over The World, Damned, (It's Hard Letting You Go), I'll Sleep When I'm Dead and acoustic renditions of I'll Be There For You, I'd Die For You and In These Arms

instead of

This House Is Not For Sale, Raise Your Hands, Born To Be My Baby, Lost Highway, Whole Lot Of Leavin', Have A Nice Day, Amen, Bed Of Roses, We Don't Run, These Days, God Bless This Mess, We Got It Goin' On.

It's kind of telling how much irrelevant stuff is crammed into a Bon Jovi setlist nowadays. It's neither interesting for a casual or a diehard.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Are you really saying that These Days is irrelevant and that it doesn't interest the crowd?

No. He probably means that most diehards wouldn't be interested in hearing These Days anymore, considering how bad Jon usually sounds on it (and he did on the verses of the Tallinn version, too - the choruses were surprisingly strong in comparison, but it was mostly my personal attachment to the song that made it a highlight of the show for me). As for the casuals, most of them don't even know the song, so they probably just wouldn't care about it at all.

But one thing I really don't understand: why wouldn't people care about Bed Of Roses? It's a) one of their biggest hits ever and b) about the only older song in the set list that Jon does a semi-decent job on (considering his current vocal state).

If most diehards wouldn't be interested to hear These Days because of the sh*t vocals, then why do most people on this forum want to hear Always and I'll Be There For You? They know that he'll sound bad if he tries to sing them...

Is it just me or does Jon sound pretty decent in the wedding video, considering it was in 2016? It maybe has something to do with him being more relaxed because he is mostly with close people, so he knows that they're not going to bash him and say "hey Jon, why did you bother to sing, you fu*king suck!",

No, I'm saying compare the main set from 1996 to the main set they're doing now. Both have about the same amount of hits in it but it's only in nowadays set where nearly half of what they're playing the first 1,5 hour is irrelevant.

All the new songs? No one wants to hear them. Amen? No one gives a shit. All that stuff from Lost Highway? Who cares? We Weren't Born To Follow? No one cared in 2010 and no one cares now. That's 8 songs in the main set no one's interested in. 7, if you don't count We Got It Goin' On, as that seems to please a crowd sometimes.

It's why I said, slap It's My Life in the encore, maybe add Have A Nice Day to it as well and you've got your setlist. I don't think anyone would mind if Bon Jovi would tour this setlist;

01. Helter Skelter
02. You Give Love A Bad Name
03. Runaway
04. All I Want Is Everything
05. Something For The Pain
06. Lie To Me
07. Rockin' All Over The World
08. Blood On Blood
09. Diamond Ring (acapella)
10. Damned
11. Bad Medicine
12. I'll Be There For You (acoustic)
13. I'd Die For You (acoustic)
14. In These Arms (acoustic)
15. Lay Your Hands On Me
16. Someday I'll Be Saturday Night
17. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
18. Keep The Faith w/ Jungle Screams

Encore:
19. It's My Life
20. Have A Nice Day
21. Livin' On A Prayer

A setlist like this proves, judging by current setlists, Bon Jovi haven't released anything relevant in nearly 20 years. That's 2 covers, 1 song from the first album, 3 from Slippery, 4 from New Jersey, 2 from Keep The Faith, 4,5 from These Days, 1 from Crush and one from Have A Nice Day. Everything else is irrelevant, or are you genuinely thinking their current set is more interesting than above?

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

No, I never implied this. The thing is, even if don't like it, they've really got no choice but to play the newer stuff. Jon seems desperate to prove that they're still relevant and not a nostalgia act. That's a part of why I think he keeps making new records and keeps touring.

Maybe so, but the balance is a bit lost. There's 9 songs from the eighties, 3 from the nineties and 9 from the past 20 years during which Bon Jovi essentially scored 2 hits.

I agree with a band needing to represent every era of their career, but to go on tour with a setlist of which nearly half of focusses on the least succesful period of said career you better make sure that half is interesting. There's no need to play 3 songs of Lost Highway nor are We Weren't Born To Follow and Amen needed to make sure they're not a nostalgia band. These setlists just don't work, there've been massive luls in the shows.

Swap these for 5 songs for anything else of the last 20 years and people would actually enjoy and you've got a completely different set. Just make sure it hasn't been played to death the last 3 tours. I've honestly no idea why Jon rebuild a band, had a chance to do things differently and instead build that version of the band most die hards started to get fed up with 20 years ago.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Salaam Aleikum,

Sebastiaan

Nail on head.

Regardless of how Richie left, one of the things he did have a point with was the formulaic, regimented approach to the band and its music.

It HAD gotten old. And Jon has continually proved him right.

Nothing really interesting in terms of musicianship. Limited guitar work. It all feels cold and processed. In reality, Phil has not really brought a thing to the table.

I remember years ago, probably before HAND, reading an interesting article on the band were the journalist commented that “Jon Bon Jovi has a truly great album in him. Whether we ever get to see it is doubtful”

The thrust of the article was Jon’s reluctance to brake the mould, take a chance and risk commercial failure.

Sad to see he was right after all.

Couldn't agree more with most of what you say. For me at least it's not that they play songs from LH, it's that they play the same two songs from LH and the same song from the circle etc. I like that they still play some newer stuff, but to me it should be 70-80% pre 2000 and the rest post 2000
