I figured there ought to be someone going for this same old routine again.
I said the same thing about Jon Bon Jovi at Twickenham in 2008. Great crowd, good setlist, good vocals that day and yet none of the magic was there as Jon was just going through the motions.
A year or so later the documentary came out and it turned out he was suffering from a migraine because of his worries about the Central Park show happening a little later.
After having seen the odd 20 shows you just know when someone's there or when someone isn't. Weren't you able to tell if your teacher had an off day as well? Or your boss? Once you grow familiar with someones antics you just know when something's off.
With most shows since Richie's departure Jon just doesn't care anymore. His motivational drive on the 2013 tour was solely money and it showed during every single performance. He wasn't there to sell the music, he was there to sell a product.

He wasn't great vocally that night, but the fact that every second or third song was something unexpected kept fans going and Jon sharp because he really had to play outside his standard comfort zone of the time.

The hyping I think a lot of it had something to do with what happened at the show in 2011 and many fans travelled to see the show in Milan, expecting a similar thing, especially once word got out this time it'd be even more spectacular.
Then the crowd lived up to its reputation and the show was very long with several rarities. This makes a lot of fans think it's a great show. Hyde Park was the same thing. Munich 2011 as well. All long shows with Jon completely on autopilot which only turned off once he'd have to deliver something out of his comfort zone. Milan was a pretty good farewell. 2 hours of music making me realize its over and then an encore showing he's able to still do it but won't. There's not one show since Lisbon 2011 making me wish I was there.
Salaam Aleikum,
