There's a few other songs out there like this as well that weren't part of the broadcast and you hear them rehearse songs like the Animals medley and Papa Was A Rolling Stone for the first time. Someone has to go out and buy the original record so they all know how the original vocal arrangements are and I think Tico sings partially lead on that as well. Alec makes plenty of mistakes, he can't play the Keep The Faith bass intro and skips notes here and there. It's a great find.

Hm, that still confuses me. It's clear they're working out the arrangement for Fields of Fire, they're pretty much writing the song during the recording of Evening With?

That WOULD make more sense with Alec being there I guess then.

I've not listened to it that carefully yet (The entire download is at least 11 hours long). Jon does know how the full song goes though, he's pretty much guiding them through the song, so no, they're not writing it there. They're just working on the live arrangement of the song as it's slightly different from the studio version, and with them having recorded roughly 40 songs for Keep The Faith it's not surprising they can't remember one or two.

Judging from the way Alec plays Keep The Faith live during the rehearsals and the way the song sounds on the album I reckon it's Huey playing the bassline on the studio version. Alec is skipping notes all over the song. It wouldn't surprise me if Alec wasn't there most of the time while recording the album and its respective outtakes, thus not knowing Fields Of Fire either. Jon snaps a few times at Alec during the rehearsals as well.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

This is all such good info. I'd love to hear more. Both Richie and Jon at the top of their abilities......

Fields of Fire is such an odd choice of song for such an event. But then again, its not like it's never been done before at others. Ie Cadillac Man......

If the audio in reference is over 11 hours, doesnt that seems a little long for a rehersal? It does sound like they are trying to work out the studio arangement.

I don't mean to keep beating a dead horse but it is nice to see both Jon and Richie working together instead of what is now believed to be Jon and John.

As far as the Alec and Hugh thing goes. No one publicly really knows the deal.

Alec was more than just a touring musician. I'm sure he was in the studio and played on all the albums until he left. I think Hugh might have assisted in some writing and cleaned Alec's mistakes but Alec was still involved..... who knows. But I don't think it was as cut and dry as Hugh was studio only and Alec was live only.

What you're saying makes sense but it's still askew. With them promoting the KTF why would they be rehearsing a live version of a song that didn't make the record. The lyrics are slightly different, Jon's saying things like "When you get the melody down" and "When you know the words" etc implying it hasn't been recorded yet. Even the B-section has a different swing to it. Didn't someone say FoF was formally recorded after KTF? Pre-Wedding day post KTF?

Man this sounds like such a cool recording. I forgot how much I used to love this band.

I don't know either why they're trying to learn the song either, when they were rehearsing for these shows they'd already done a full club tour and the album was already out. Maybe Jon just really liked the song and wanted to play it anyway? I've got no idea. They go through I Wish Everyday Could Be Like Christmas as well, another song not on the album. Same for the cover tunes. I think Jon just wanted it to be more of a show that'd showcase their talents. New songs, old songs, unreleased stuff, Christmas songs and cover tunes. It really is a bit of everything.

But like I said, I haven't listened to it all yet. I hadn't picked up on the "When You Know The Words", the section where they're rehearsing Papa Was A Rolling Stone is 30 minutes long so it's all a lot to digest. There's another one being rehearsed of which I am sure will show up on youTube sooner or later that'll make you all drool.

I know there were recording sessions during the Keep The Faith tour, but considering how thin Jon's voice sounds (They go from standard tuning to half a step down on the second day of rehearsals I think), it'd surprise me if he was still able to sing as well as he did on the studio recording of the song. Then again, during the rehearsals he seems to switch to "performance" vocal and "guiding vocal" a lot.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

I could totally see Jon wanting this show to be similar to Elvis' 68 comeback special. He even covered "Baby What You Want Me To Do". And just like Elvis, Jon wanted to do a Cristmas song. Maybe Jon wanted to do it big and whoever was incharge decided to keep it simple.

I'd like to hear more rarities, if available.
