If you write music, you know when you're ripping off entire songs. You'll know when you steal a lick here and there. You just do. The same goes for chord progressions, licks, or even guitar solo's. You know when you're borrowing things, but that's usually where it ends for most. You borrow and make it your own.
So one phrase or lick? Sure, it can happen. That's a coïncidence. But not complete verses sung in the same tempo with the same kind of arrangements, like the one It's my faith just pointed out. That's not borrowing, that's just copying something you liked. Claiming that such a thing is a coïncidence is the same thing like me writing a story called Snow White and the Six Dwarfs, and then saying I didn't rip that off from anyone either.
The funny thing is that usually the people who say it's "evolution" or a "coïncidence" are those who lack the creativity to either discover an overlap or write something original (whether good or bad) themselves.
