(BTY, this interview notes 2001 but it's actually 1997 because Jon says later on that 7800 was 12 years ago so 1985 + 12 = 1997)

Can someone explain this interview? Just listen at 20:00 it's the interview from 1988 that I've posted earlier where Jon talks about some tracks like Diamond Ring and Let's Make it Baby.

I think this interview is actually 2 interviews together, from 13:00-13:30 and 14:15 it's another Jon from 1997 probably.

I didn't listen to it in its entirety, but that interview was obviously composed of several interviews, hence the mixed up dates. Either that clip where he says Drive is 9 years old is from 2000/2001 OR he mixes dates himself, which is not uncommon. Didn't he say on the Borgata show in 2004 that the KTF record is "already 10 years old"?

Here's why Drive is either from '92 or '97:
- The sound (instruments, Jons voice) and the funky style is nothing like they did in '88.
- He sings "when 17 has turned 30, it's all gone..." he was 26 in 1988.
- That part of the lyric delves into his disillusionment of the music bisness which didn't really occur until after the burn out. Grey summer and all that.
- On the sleeve note of the '97 single, where Drive was released, it says the track was produced by Bob Rock. Bob was the engineer on New Jersey, but Bruce Fairbairn produced. Rock on the other hand produced KTF.

The one thing that's always kept me confused is that the drums don't sound like Tico to me. This is pretty far out, but it could be that the drums were rerecorded in '97, while rest of the track was left untouched.

I agree. I think it's two too. I need to listen to the entire thing again but I think it's either in another part of that interview or just in another source all together but Jon makes a specific reference to "Drive" being from NJ...

Drive 1992, but could be re-worked in 1997.

That could be but at the Borgata show in 2004 Jon also asked Richie whether The Radio Saved My Life Tonight was written for NJ or KTF. He always confuses these kind of things

This is all great research / great points and I do agree with most of them but I have to go with Jon's word. Similar to a Diamond Ring, Drive might have started with NJ and just kept on being reworked... Diamond Ring is also listed on the Keep The Faith track-listing above too.

Here it is in the interview where Jon states that "Drive" was written for NJ.
13:28 (and then he states that's it's 9 years later from 1997)... There is just too much going on there to make me think that it's just a mistake.

Again, it could have been reworded a few times for Faith and DA but Jon is specific to NJ whereas Outlaws doesn't state a specific album, Jon just says that it's a song he forgot about because it goes so far back.

At this point I'm going to chalk it up that Drive is as a Diamond Ring type scenario. The Chorus and Hooks sound a little 80s'-ish - but the versers and Jon's voice have a combination of 92 / 97....

It really depends on when the interview was recorded in relation to when Drive was. Didn't Jon immediately say Why aren't you dead was from Crush? The subject matter is just so Grey summer and deals with the burnout of the industry. No way would he blame the record industry for taking his innocence in 1988.

At 13:28 when Jon states that Drive was written for NJ, it's 1997! When you listen to the entire thing, you could tell the differences between interviews and he's referring to the songs on DA at the Present time.

I totally agree that most of the song points to the Grey Summer. This song could even be about his motorcycle ride across the country with Dorothea... Until I conclude more clarification, I could only assume that this was a reworked title that started around NJ.

Sadly it's a clarification we'll never get as it's such an obscure moment in time that no interviewer will ever ask him. I wonder if it was written for NJ and recorded in '91, hence Bob Rock producing. But he could also just as easily gotten the years mixed up, my example still stands of him confusing what albums songs were recorded for due the amount of things demoed throughout the years. Given his mixing up years, I'd stand by the album credits, subject matter, sound and feel over off-hand recollection.

Though I don't think it's something we'll be able to convince each other of without proper proof.
