But I think the reason they don't do this is because they failed in the past. With TLFR they tried to go new paths but the fans didn't like it. With Lost Highway they tried a different direction and people hated it. So they rather stay with the same scheme than try another new thing with which they might fail again.

I don't think they see Lost Highway as a failure, if anything they admit it was wrong to call it a country album. Half of the damn album is still in the setlist (Lost Highway, Memory, Leaving, We Got it Going On, I Love This Town) they all get played pretty often.
I think it's funny that every album is treated by the press and band as a "return to the rock sound".
