I think you are digging a little too deep here.
Yes, it's an honor but it's such a common occurrence that the venue where it's being sung dictates the honor. This event was a good match for Richie's celebrity rank.
As far as Richie celebrating afterwards, I think that he was just pumped that he nailed it. I think these guys are in a place, in their mid 50's, where there start to question whether they still got it or not. A pumped high 5 afterwards was in order and I think Richie needed that. Good for him!
