Just yesterday, on a 3 hour car drive back home, I listened to a whole lot of various music from various artists on my USB stick...and of course there were some Bon Jovi songs included.
While listening to I think In These Arms I had the same thought as you: The older songs had such a different songwriting. I got the feeling that with those songs during the writing process all that mattered was that song and that's why most of them were so good. That's what you call "sincere" and I think that describes it very well.
Most of todays songs just seem to be a means to an end. "Let's write a song and another one...alright that's a dozen, now we have an album to release."
Of course not all of the old stuff is gold and not all of the new stuff is crap...but new gems have become very very rare.
