actually Def Leppard tones down half a step during live performances aswell, just like BJ and most bands.
My bad. Thanks for correcting me.

You aren't completely off-base. Joe tends to still sing in the same relative octave..though tuned down half a step...where Jon will sometimes sing an octave lower in addition to being a half step down.

Between the two of them and their both their voices changing.....Joe is the one that has successfully made the transition without sacrificing actual enjoyment of his voice. In fact, I feel his voice has matured for the better. You can tell he actually honed and perfected it..he worked at it. The strength, warmth, smooth, richness of his matured voice is actually preferable over his 80s screaming which was unreliable and spotty in live performances. Listen to Turn to Dust, Paper Sun, Now, Desert Song, Deliver Me. There is much more emotion coming through now than before. Live, he tends to be more consistent than he was in the 80s. He doesn't hit all the old screams...but it's ok because he's making up for it by really focusing on his strengths and making it hit. He first really exhibited his developed voice on Slang, but gave a preview on Retroactive in 1993. He's been using it ever since.

Jon on the other hand comes off as if he is just plain lazy and takes his voice and his role as a singer/frontman for granted....which he does if his attitude and comments in interviews since 2000 are anything to go by. He regards it as his day job with his passion being in movies and now football.

I’ve been away for a while and I have to say you Bleeder always get the point.
I’ve just listened to Borgata show and I have to say Jon’s performance is quite embarrassing in some songs. I agree with you when you say others interests has got him away from what should be his first one…the good health of his voice.
I watched the new DVD last night and I realize nowadays Jon’s a very very good smoker…almost every shot has him with a cigarette…go on Jon, keep on turning your tunes down and down again.

Personally I like his voice in lower tunes even if “Something to believe in” gave me shrives, not exactly the same for the recent stuff. but I think he’s starting having problems the same
The point is, how to sing the old stuff on tour without giving such bad performances?
Maybe a rap version of LOAP can help? (just kidding)
Will this man start training his voice again after some “boooing” by his odiens? Naahh…

I also think smoking is giving him breath problems…during living on a prayer he simly has no breath to make his chords play.
Let’s hope that was just a bad night but I don’t think so.
The ones who said he was not bad are just getting used to his new standard..

Just another point…38 “new” songs and a show with Sleep + Bad Medicine + Shout??
What’s the need of that?
What did you pay people of Borgata? 300 Dollars to hear that f***ing sequence again??? And again? And maybe forever?
Is that the best and only way they know to end a set list? I’ve seen them live during every tour since keep the faith and they always play that!
I’ll pay attention to the sets of the next tour before buying a ticket.
I think they should reserve smaller stadiums for this one.

I appreciate both of your opinions. I did find Joe's voice very enjoyable, and the change from the original version is so minute that people wouldn't normally notice.

And PAPER SUN rocks. What an incredible song.

Stop busting on him. You know what he means. Obviously it is a matter of opinion.

Oh, and Jon's voice is better. :P
I second that :P

No seriously, i prefer Jon's voice but i loooove Richie's voice too. BJ is the band it is with Jon as the singer. Harmony of both voices is just special and great.

This is why I said you were cruel and had a wrong attitude. You seem to believe that Jon sounds the way he sounds by his choice. I believe it's presumptuous of you to assume that. (Not just you BTW.)

I am sure Jon does the best he can (today). I have no reasons to assume otherwise. Had he been able to sing better, he would have sung better. He gives his all. He has always given his all. For you, his all - as of today - is not enough. Move on then because Jon is not likely to significantly improve. Had he been able to improve, he would have.

I still think it was a great show and he sang great.

Well, all I have to say is that he's losing it. I liked his enthusiasm and everything but the singing just isn't the same. It seems like from comparing this show to one of the Bounce Shows that his voice just seemed to get worse. I won't complain so much to say that it's ruined my whole experience. He has it in him somewhere, he's just having trouble finding it. But yes, I see what you mean.

If he will, I'll be very happy. But if he will not, I am not the one to throw stones at him. My attitude is Jon does the best he can. And ultimately, it is his battle and only his.

I wonder what Jon himself thinks about the whole issue. He is so public yet so private.
