I think it's a classic metaphor for having something to hold on to when you don't know or care where the road is leading you.
It's a classic country/blues metaphor. A protector, guardian angel.
Moses wandered the dersert for 40 years with nothing but God to rely on, so I guess a dashboard Jesus will be enough for Jons little cartrip

No You're over analysing it now. Ofcause it had to be in plastic. Who has a golden statue of Jesus in his car?

Actually, that's just what I was about to say, that's exactly my interpretation of it ... although I don't think it's about Jon letting go of religion, I think it's more related to the "got just enough religion" line. Basically I think it's saying ... well actually, looking back on Butters post, I pretty much take the same interpretation as he does

Incidentally, what is the reference from Access All Areas? I've only seen it once and it's not springing to mind ...

Well, I don't care if it rains or freezes,
Long as I have my plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Through all trials and tribulations,
We will travel every nation,
With my plastic Jesus I'll go far.

By George Cromarty and Ed Rush (The Goldcoast Singers)

There are a million verses from this song but that one is the one that sticks with me - I guess since it was the first one LOL

I think the movie Cool Hand Luke (Paul Newman) from the 60's made it famous.

Kathleen
Thanks for that kathleen, i'd thought hubby and his mate made that up cause they only ever sing it when they're drunk and never get past the 'dashboard of our car' bit cause they cant remember the words....and your right it was in cool hand luke.

If he's got a golden statue of Jesus in the car, I hope his trip doesn't take him through Newark. Or Jackson, MS., either!

Nah, I'm not seeing the "plastic" as significant. I remember those dashboard thingies from when I was quite young. My parents would never have been caught dead with one in the car, but I remember seeing them in other cars.

So maybe the PDJ has something to do with a trip back to a simpler time of life, and a more care-free existence. No matter how old you are, things typically seem like they were "simpler" twenty or twenty-five years ago.

Now this is over-analysis.

I'm wondering how long this thread will be

About the Jesusfigure: It could (or could it?) be a Elvisfigure instead?
I can imagene a little plastic dashboard Elvis in his car
I believe it would have been pretty much the same, just with a touch of humour!
Maybe Jon forgot about Elvis and he's reading this and maybe, yeah, maybe if he one day sings "plastic dashboard Elvis" you know where it came from

It wouldn't rhyme with "waitin' there to greet us".

And somehow I feel people are really, really over-analyzing this.

Lol, well Ice, it's something to do....

Maybe he could have one of those Jesus bobblehead's instead. That would be funny.
