Rock music is not selling like it did in the US- the charts are dominated by pop, hip hop and country. I think Bounce stands up there with any other rock release this year- at least there is variety from song to song. You can argue Bruce is at the top of his game but he does not appeal to the same age group by and large and he really hasn't changed his sound much (added some Sting like world beats but that is it). Personally Bounce is up there with These Days and New Jersey as my top 3 and I think they are all complete albums that I enjoy listening to every song. Keep the Faith as well. The ones with the biggest hits- Slippery and Crush have their weaker moments around the monster songs that made them big (and big again).
I agree, nice post. But just for the record, the Chili Peppers have been around as long as BJ.

ok, about what i said about U2 - a few yrs ago when Crush was released it was a time when my fave bands U2, BON JOVI & DEFLEPPARD (coincidentally all 80's bands! lol) all released their new "back-to-original-sound" albums!

DEF LEPPARD and BON JOVI - two pop metal bands returned to their original sound with "EUPHORIA and CRUSH" from their dark albums "THESE DAYS and SLANG" released around '96.
U2 returned to their spirit chasing anthemic stadium rock evanglical music with "ALL THAT YOU CANT LEAVE BEHIND" from their dance-heavy album "POP" released around the same time as the albums from the other bands.

my point is that out of all the THREE "back-to-original-sound" albums only U2 conquered! i would have loved for all three of them to peak again but sadly it never happened.

when ur talking about rock 'n roll a dying species - i think thats BON JOVI's & DEF LEPPARD's own faults for selling out and not keeping up the mind-blowing innovation of "THESE DAYS and SLANG"

whereas U2's "ALL THAT YOU CANT LEAVE BEHIND" was a mix of everything cos it had a folk rock feel to half the tracks and a pop rock sense to the rest.

THIS IS WHY I SAY, AS A ROCK 'N ROLL BAND, U2 HAVE MANAGED TO MAINTAIN THEIR SUCCESS WITH ALBUM SALES & RECORD BREAKING TICKET SALES IN THE U.S AND INCREASING SUCCESS WITH THE CRITICS WORLDWIDE!

So U2 went from a crap album to a good one? Now there's something to be proud of

whats so special with u2? they havn't done anything that bon jovi hasn't (I know somebody wrote that before me, but then it was the other way around... ).
just because U2 has succes right now doesn't make them a great rockband, bon jovi wasn't a great rockband back in 2000 when crush was released, they was just some stupid mainstream radio friendly rock band... just as U2 are today! actually I like u2, but not their latest work, I prefer their old stuff.
I actually like bounce, RSOWR, The distance, Hook me up and so on are good songs, of course, not as good as keep the faith, DC, hey god and damned but they are good!

U2's marketing is amazing!

What were U2's recent songs? Electrical Storm (horrible) and that Oscar nominated song. Can you believe it!! That song just won The Golden Globe over Eminem's Lose yourself! U2 is the living proof that u don't have to write good music to get lots of awards and critical acclaim. U just have to have the right image and also know the right people in the industry. I am not sayong they are a bad band. They are very good band. It's just they are the most overrated band ever!

I have 7 U2 records in my collections includind AYCLB. So my opinion is based on their work. (And by work I mean the music!) In the 80s they were my fave band. They have some amazing songs. But not as many as the general public believes (amazing marketing for U2!).

P.S. Bon Jovi were never critically acclaimed. Never!

I think we should all be happy that Bon Jovi has done so well in these new times, coming from the olden days. That's one thing that makes Bon Jovi so great--the ability to still produce awesome music in a new era.
