The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the sole determinant of legendary status?

Neat.

That had me puzzled as well.
I thought it was just kind of a very expensive elite club of something.

Yeay kind of like the Hollywood Walk of Fame where you pay money to get your star...

Who votes bands into the hall of fame anyway? Is it critics?

But "legend" is more often reserved for people who live in excess and die young.
just like new kids on the block, are they legends in your opinion either then?

NKOTB were a throwback to New Edition and the Jackson 5 before them.

NKOTB are not STILL selling out stadiums and arenas around the world. They weren't the first band to be officially sanctioned to play in the USSR. They weren't the first band to have a legal release in the USSR. They weren't the first rock band to have a #1 country single. They weren't the last to play Wembly. They haven't had #1 singles 20 years apart. They don't hold the record for playing to the most people in any country like Bon Jovi have with Japan. They have no relevance in today's music. That's the difference. Bon Jovi have been breaking and setting records for 20 years. They are STILL relevant and productive, a stark contrast to NKOTB.

Legend is just a label that can be argued. Whether they have it or not doesn't mean much. Their accomplishments are what stand up to any argument.

According to Jon himself, he is going to be inducted into the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME NEXT YEAR. He has the date at the Waldorf Astoria already blocked to accept the award himself.

Living Legends indeed.

I thought you had to have been in the business for 25 years (since their first album), meaning they won't be eligible until 2009

Yes you are right it is 25 years from the release of the first album. So 2009 if they get in in their first year of eligibility.
