R.I.P. Richie's golden voice 1983-2002 :(

Actually, with nowadays technologies you can.

Once you've got someone's voice singing a full octave you can pretty much bend every false note into the right direction take or leave out rasps. It's how Britney Spears can sound as "good" as she does on record while she's never been able to complete a full sentence like this when singing live. Someone can't hit the note in the right key? Just sing it a few notes lower and we'll bend it to the right one. Often however it's very clear when such a thing is done, just like it is on Richie's latest album.

But if you can fake the whole thing, why does it still sound like Richie? His voice still sounds quite strong on that record (of course not as good as it used to be but we should get over that fact) That performance sounded like utter crap, though.
And BS never sounded good on anything!

Because you've got the tone of his voice down. If you've got the tone of someone's voice you can pretty much make him sing anything you want him to. Yet even that tone can be mimicked, all you've got to do is find someone who sounds similar and only the die hards will hear how it's not really Richie.

Think about it, if you wouldn't know it was Richie singing the verses of Nowadays, wouldn't you think it was someone else as well? I'm not hinting at Richie not having sung that song, but iif you can process a voice so much that it barely sounds like him, you can do it the other way around as well. Take someone who has a similar voice Richie has, and then put a bunch of effects over it to make him sound like a carbon copy. They've done it an insane amount of times, even back in the 60's this was done already, though effects back then were very limited.

With today's studio tricks I could in theory put a vocal line down and then have it processed through Richies tone to make my voice sound like Richie's. It'll never be a 100% match but it'll get close enough. There have been quite a few examples recently that put these technologies in the spotlight (Michael Jackson's 2010 record, Tupac's hologram performance at Coachella). Bury a voice in the effects of the music and no one'll notice apart from a select few die hards.

This footage is obviously fake. If it weren't I'd had to admit Richie messed up chords, licks, prayer, wanted, the new song and the vocals, omg those vocals.

Please say it isn't so, don't you know that all my heroes died?

Holy cow, that was awful on both vocals AND guitar work. That guitar sounds like shit to begin with, but his playing definitely didn't help. I'm betting he'll be in much better shape for his tour, but if he isn't...

Fair enough, it was pretty much first time live performance of the new song, but he murdered Prayer too.
The only positive I can think of is that maybe it didn't sound as bad if you were there.

Okay this was bad, but no need to get carried away. The guitar masterclass he did wasn't that long ago and that was great. No-one could go downhill that quickly, i think we can just put it down to an off day.
