I need to apologise to VanJovi and anyone who was offended by my last post in this thread.

I completely understand if people arent going to go the show if they have to travel to get there, like Terri mentioned.

I just dont see why someone wouldn't go if it is in their home city. There really is nothing to lose except 3 hours? Maybe I see it differently because I live in Australia and we rarely get a good chance to see the band compared to people in North America.

I retract my 'stupidity' comment and will agree to disagree.

Still hoping for a speedy recovery for Richie.

A lot of that has to do with the fact he's referred to as the Edge, how many people would be able to name drop Gordon Summer or Graham McPherson if they didn't go by the name Sting and Suggs?

As for your point about Keef. He was involved in an accident and no one is going to question the band for cancelling gigs in that situation. What's happening with Richie isn't an accident, it isn't out of the blue and it would leave a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths if they did start cancelling and **** up the whole tour on account of his drinking.

I genuinely think Jon is more concerned about being pragmatic than making money on this one (let's be fair he doesn't need it) but even if he is being a cynical money grubbing c*nt, as band leader it's his perogative, it's the music business not the music charity.
So if Richie changes his name to The Bomb, 9 out of 10 people are more likely to know who he is?

I'm not saying the accident=the alcoholism. I'm just saying that both bands, for whatever reason had their guitarists unavailable. Incidentally, for all we've been told, maybe something bad has happened to Richie, something people would be a lot more sympathetic about. This is just an example, but say he found out the other day that he has cancer, went home with his mind all over the place and thought 'I want to get smashed'. Could you blame him for that? Maybe he's had the drink under control until something monumentally bad has happened. We just don't know, but a lot of folk seem to have the stance that he's just not giving a shit.

There's nothing dense about it. Go back out on your street and do another poll, ask 1000 people this time- name a member of U2. If The Edge is as well known as Bono, will 500 people choose him?

And we're talking about your Average Joe around the world, they're not going to 'pick out an Edge guitar part', they're gonna recognise a U2 song.

He didn't and he has not had his drinking under control. Anyone who has been to shows knows that.

I know people who have been to multiple Jovi shows that don't know who Richie is and don't care.
You're missing my point. I'm not saying he's as famous as them, I'm saying that if you were to ask people if they knew who Richie Sambora was, if they said yes, they wouldn't go "oh that bloke that shagged Heather Locklear" and know nothing of his career. That is my point.

Hate to disagree with you man but I think The Edge's fame is based purely on his ridiculous nickname - it sticks in the mind. It certainly isn't anything to do with his musical prowess that's for sure.

Ask 500 people walking down the street to pick out Richie or The Edge from a line-up (no hats allowed! ) and I think the results would be pretty much evenly balanced cos next to nobody would recognise them. I could quite easily bump into The Edge walking along the street unawares and not have a clue who he was even though I have listened to and watched plenty of U2 performances before.

I feel the same Anthony, if the gig is close by they should still go if they have tickets to support the band...

Ask name 2 members of U2 and they'll say Bono and the Edge.

Ask name 2 members of Bon Jovi and most people will go, wait, it's not the one guy.

The Edge is hugely famous much like Brian May even though Freddie was THE frontman in Queen.

I'm pretty sure most people would be able to recognise the intro to Where the Streets Have No Name compared to anything Richie has done.

Gav I didn't say his fame was based on his guitar prowess (have you ever seen It Might Get Loud? :-s ) and I did mention that it has a lot to do with his name but my opinion stands that A LOT more u2 concert goers, even the casuals would be more pissed if they knew the Edge wasn't going to be appearing (even if they couldn't pick him out in an identity parade) than the majority of people going to Bon Jovi shows who really just want to hear Prayer and see Jon wiggle his ass for a bit.

Oh yeah because nobody recognises Prayer from the talkbox intro...

Prayer is much more recognisable than Where the streets have no name.
