Again, your reply makes no sense.

The album that turned me into a fan wasn't a band album, it was Young Guns II. To me, although it's a rock album, it had a very country-ish feel (again, not real country, but I was 13 - I thought it was country...lol). I like some country-ish rock bands - e.g. Counting Crows, and Kid Rock (but he crosses lots of genres), The Eagles.

Fast forward and we have Lost Highway - if that was the first album I'd heard, I don't think it would make me a fan but I'd probably appreciate some of the songs. However, I think we're all forgetting a point - I don't think, when you become a fan of Jovi that it's "just" the music -

Most of us became a fan because that music "spoke" to us at whatever point in the time of our lives we were at - we'd have related to something there. Nothing they ever do is going to give you those same chills as the first time you suddenly "get it" - and Lost Highway wouldn't speak to me at the point my life is at now.

I think you make a good point but it's only partially true. I got into Jovi with These Days. I had very hard times understanding the lyrics but the music I was hearing thrilled me. The roughness of the opening chords of Hey God, the melodic flow of These Days, the funky rhythms of Damned, the power of the vocals in my Guitar. I wasn't relating to that record in any way. It was just a brilliant musical composition and I couldn't and can't get enough of it. Of course, the vocals were important, but not for what they said but for how they added to the music. Later I got to understand the lyrics and it seemed completely natural that Hey God was speaking about losing faith, These Days about what it means to live through certain times...etc. When I got Cross Road, Faith and Jersey, 7800, Slippery and eventually BJ, in this order, again, I was relating to the music more than to anything else. I thought Bon Jovi ROCKED big time, more than Aerosmith and Guns 'n' Roses who were the other bands I liked at that time. I never associated Bon Jovi with any feelings, with breakups, with losing friends or religion or whatever, It was always amazingly high quality music, from drums to vocals. Then Crush came and it was different. I enjoyed only very few songs and I got disappointed. Same goes for any subsequent album. None of them appealed to me for musical reasons and if the music is not there, I will never ever relate to a record as I did with These Days, with Faith or say with a song like Wanted Dead or Alive.

Maybe that's where we differ - while I love a song that rocks, I love it because of the "feeling" it gives me - maybe because I'm a writer I pay more attention to the lyrics and try to find an emotional connection to anything I listen to (you mentioned g'n'r, for instance, estranged - what a fantastic song), and maybe that's why I get Lost Highway maybe more than you do. I can feel the connection to songs like Make A Memory (And also, we just had it as our wedding song), Whole Lot Of Leaving, Any Other Day. We Got It Going On is kinda' rocky but cause it's that daft I can't connect with it at all. Obviously, the music has to be good (and whether you like LH or not, the music's still decent - just a bit different and not to everyones taste) as well though.

Interesting how different people obviously even listen to music in different ways - some with their ears, some with something else - lol

That's so true - music is such a personal thing; I've said that a hundred times. Experiences can change how you think of a song, and if you enjoy it or not. I love WGIGO becuase the first time I heard it (when I bought the album) was when I played it over the big speakers at work to a big group of workmates. We had a great time listening to it, and now my mind always thinks of that great fun when the song plays.

I'm not especially moved my much of These Days, because I've never really thought about it in any way, listened to it in a special situation or whatever. I appreciate that it features great songs, great musically and lyrically, but I prefer to listen to songs from HAND, KTF, Bounce, SWW and lately, partly becuase I've taken writing inspiration from it, and partly because I'm more and more into Adult Contemperary; Lost Highway.
