Wasnt it universale stopped BJ from releaseing a double Live album and we ended up with the garbage that was OWN. The other things that springs to mind was it was the record company's decision to release AALY when I recall Richie wanting The Distance.

Universal run and distribute Island Def Jam, as they did with Mercury

No explanation as to the variety and change but its all under the Universal label

if it's released under mercury or recorded when they were at mercury then the rights belong to mercury.
