Default Review of Stranger in This Town

Quote:
RICHIE SAMBORA Stranger in This Town (Mercury) Admittedly, one of the more twisted kicks in pop is watching the semi-talented members of popular groups decide that their gifts can't be properly displayed in a mere band, and then proceed to make utter fools of themselves on ill-conceived solo albums. Members of Kiss and Yes did it in the '70s, and now it's Bon Jovi's turn. Last year, lead singer Jon Bon Jovi played dress-up cowboy on the callow Blaze of Glory, and with Stranger in This Town guitarist Richie Sambora takes the plunge. Like Bon Jovi, Sambora sees himself as not just another dispenser of derivative, if occasionally appealing, arena rock. That would be far too simple. Instead, he pictures himself as a tormented, angst-ridden blues-guitar warrior, grunting and groaning about how he can ''dance with the devil down lonely street'' and take his woman down to the ''river of love,'' all to puffy, overblown arrangements and hackneyed Blues ''R'' Us licks. Although a fist raiser like ''Rosie'' should sound fine on the radio, most of the album resembles the blowsy pop-metal of Whitesnake on a really bad day. Nothing even comes close to matching Sambora's finest hour: His appealingly strained cry of ''wan-ted!'' in Bon Jovi's ''Wanted Dead or Alive.'' Alas, there are no plans for Bon Jovi drummer Tico Torres to make a solo album exploring the historical importance of the cymbal. C- -David Browne

Pathetic review. Stranger In This Town is second only to These Days when it comes to superbly crafted, in-depth, meaningful songs recorded by members of Bon Jovi. This jerk probably listened through once and followed the bandwagon ...

Aloha !

Reviews like this are just written to take the piss out of Bon Jovi. The first half of the review is dedicated to nothing but bashing, and there's no talk about the songs at all. When the lead in of the story is longer than the actual review itself it's a shit review anyway.

I've read numerous reviews of Bon Jovi albums over the years and I can fully understand a reviewer not liking a Bon Jovi album. Sometimes a reviewer has a point, even though I disagree with it. However, it'd be nice if they'd give proper arguments about the music, instead of all this "it sucks" shit.

Oh well. Most music critics are shit anyway. And I can't help it, but I find it hard to take these "music critics" serious while they're writing for magazines like Entertainment Weekly.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Yeah - what he said ^

What a piece of shit interview - no facts or music comments or even pretense of objective review. Not worth the hard drive space - get rid of it LOL.

Wow. I remember reading that review way back when it was new. What was the source? Rolling Stone?

Interview?

The review is harsh, but at least the Whitesnake analogy is not that far off - I guess he at least listened to the album.

The all request hour, the girl in the front row has just asked for Blood on Blood, ok, Merry Christmas young lady!" Amazing <3

Am i the only one who doesn't like Stranger In This Town? I've always found it to be really disjointed, Undiscovered Soul is a much more rounded album with the better songs, and by far my favourite of the two.

I prefer Undiscovered Soul too, Stranger has a weird feel and the opener is poor. But if you're in the right frame of mind you can really feel the odder songs.

Sidenote; Undiscovered Soul is my favourite album of all time
