Pure speculation
Bear in mind, Jon and Richie co-wrote Who Says You Can't Go Home ... we have to assume that they probably both had some interest in exploring a country direction (and we know that Richie did as he'd mentioned it in interviews). It's quite a leap to then make the assumption that Richie was interested purely for artistic reasons while Jon was all about the money
