Since that happened at the same time as U2's Joshua Tree / Rattle and Hum period, big doubt there is.

I'd say Jon outsang Bono in the second half of the 90's.
But Bono's voice is very much back now, when Jon's is going down.

Plus it's not just the voice, it's the singing, the emotion you give to a song, and imo Bono is much much better than Jon on that aspect.

lyrics aren't the whole song or even the most important part of a song for a lot of people.

When it comes to the singing I'm sure it is...

we're talking about something very subjective here. i can't think of one joshua tree vocal that has nearly the raw power and emotion of songs such as santa fe, levon etc. he wiped the floor with pretty much every singer at that time, in my opinion.

i don't agree at all. you're telling me that when you listen to somebody sing, it's more about the lyrics than the melody? so how is it possible to like a song that's in another language?

In that period, when it comes to power yes, give it to Jon. When it comes to emotion, give it to Bono.

At least as important. If you don't listen to what is being sung, how are you supposed to know if the right emotion is displayed? It all goes together.

It's not impossible, but you might like it more or less once you understand.

very poor example because i'm really not a fan but there's a celine dion song i'm sure you're familiar with called Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore. my mum had it on one of celine's french albums. i loved the song when i was younger and still like it today. i don't understand a word of the song and yet to me she puts in a very emotive performance which negates the need for the lyrics to mean anything.

i have to say that bono is better live than studio imo but is still great in studio aswell but the way he connects with the audience is so great.(not saying jon doesn't) but bono is a great showman.

he is an amazing songwriter IMO
just listen to songs like:-
one
whose gonna ride your wild horses
stay(faraway so close)
where the streets have no name
new years day
running to stand still
bad
unforgetable fire
and my fav song of all time(so simple but great and imo carried through Bonos vocals) with or without you.

each of those have great meaning full lyrics and great vocal performances IMO

but when jon was back in 94 backwards his lyrics and vocal performances were close up there aswell.

p.s
also for people saying Bonos vocals are dropping just listen to sometimes you cant make it on your own from their new album. the build up to the opera notes is amazing and is just as good live. which in interviews bono has said that he isn't a trained singer and the only way to get to those notes is to dive deep into his emotions and the song. which you can tell during his performances.

Don't assume my tastes on where I'm from (France) or where I live (Québec).

Yet if you knew the lyrics you might like it even better... or less.

Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here wouldn't be so good with Simple Plan lyrics now would it?
