I think there's big leap of difference between being the lead guitarist singing backing vocals along with three or four others (Albeit the most prominent second vocalist) and being the lead vocalist AND lead guitarist and to me that's where he's suffered. I think with enough rehearsal he can pull it off. But switching from soling to lead vocals with rhythm is where he seems to suffer.
Get him a pro-team and I think he can turn it all around if he wants to bad enough.

Well on his first two solo tours he managed to do that very well and 2012 was still decent as well.
He could have someone to play the lead guitar parts in his songs and just concentrate on singing + doing the lead solo.
