Nuno Bettencourt could really make Jovi interesting again.

Its known on these boards that in my opinion Sambora is the Jovi weak link.
Not through his addictions but his gutiar playing since Crush has been dreadful.
The solos are a joke and the riffs pretty much unheard - except for a handful of songs.

That's not through lack of ability though, his live playing has shown that he still has the talent of a top class guitarist, it's just the songs the band have written haven't particularly showcased these talents. It doesn't matter who's playing the guitar if the guitar parts in the song aren't fancy.

His amps as far as I am aware have remained pretty consistent - Marshall JCM2000 DSLs.
I can't remember if this news was posted on here or not:

Agree.

I remember RS in an interview just before the release of his Stranger album. He said he really enjoyed making the album from a guitarists point of view as he could do longer solos and his solos in Jovi songs were only allowed to go on for so long.

Id like RS to say to JBJ - Our solos need to be longer and guitar louder.

Who can forget the WWBTF where JBJ shouted "Guitar" and there wasnt a solo - they had to re-record the song.

When it comes to live playing I think the weak link is definitely Jon and his vocals- none of the other band members have deteriorated as markedly in the last 20 years.

The Blackstar endorsement has kind of come along a little late in the day for it to be attributed to that, although perhaps that's why he's changing? It would seem strange that he managed to get good sounds out of the JCMs for so many years and suddenly struggles so much now though. Bizarre!

As far Richie's tone goes, I also agree. It has gone down hill. He doesn't have the sustain he use to have. I have been guitar player for 15 years now and know a thing or two about equipment. I, however, do not know much about his equipment. I know the quality of guitar (or lack thereof when referring to his signature ESP) has a little to do with it. I seriously doubt his fx or fx settings have anything to do with it. Fx can seriously mess up your sound if the settings are effed up, but surely he and his guitar tech know how to set it up.
Here is the guy who designed his fx system: http://www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=64558

My only guess is the amp. I haven't noticed his amp on the last couple tours. Thoughts?
As a recovering gearhound I can say that out of the modern era Marshall, the DSLs are out and out the best, his pedal board has got a lot more boutique over the years with some killer stuff on there.

On that video, the sound is very middy but without any low end so either he's completely reset his onboard EQ to make it sound terrible (which isn't very likely) or it's the guitar which to me from that KTF video in the OP sound very much like a those Jacksons that sound really thin and sustain like they're made out of cardboard.

I agree, just listen to Livin' on a prayer, Jon's vocals are aweful in the "take my hand... we'll make it I swear" verse, that's a shame! and that's been really down hill, in 2000 and 2001 during the Crush and OWN tours he still had great vocals, like in LOAP released in OWN.

Another example is MAM, which is dreadful live, just check the live version in the japanese bonus dvd and you'll see how short his vocal range is becoming.
