I guess in some cases it's hard to decide if something is a riff or not. Like with "Unbreakable" - I'm not sure. A riff is a returning guitar pattern, famous examples being "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones or the classic "Smoke On The Water" by Deep Purple - the last which you also could call "chord based".

So while "Unbreakable" may not be a classic riff, I guess we could call it one. Just as: Is the intro to "Have A Nice Day" a riff?

In the end "riff rock record" is probably one of Jon's new terms for "loud and heavy, guitar oriented rock record". Which would be cool. (And Tico: Let loose on the drums, a little bit more variety would be nice, breaks and fills etc. Sometimes I think Jon forbid him to use the toms... weird)). Anyway, good news. Hope they stick to it!!!

I'd be excited to see Richie doing more riffs again. More songs like "Last Man Standing" would be great.

Damn straight. HAND could have been a much stronger album IMO if it hadn't tried to cover too many bases (a common problem the band have had since Crush), and given us some more real rock songs

Yeah. I love HAND but it was lacking something still.

See, I disagree. I found HAND the most consistent record they did this decade. To me, Bounce suffered BIG TIME from trying to be too many things, while HAND flowed much easier. Bounce kept would go chunky rocker, power ballad, story telling song, ballad, rocker, and ended on such a weird note but, IMHO, Hand was far more up tempo and a bit more fun.
