Just a general question, why do they tune down at all when doing brand new songs live? Isn't the point of tuning down to make the song slower so it's easier to sing? I may be totally off but I swore I read that somewhere.

If so, why would they have to slow down brand new songs? The older stuff I can see, as they probably can't play as fast as they once could etc but this seems ridiculous.

Oh, we're talking about tuning town the pitch of the song, not the tempo. The speed isn't changing.

Tuning down refers to pitch NOT speed.

I don't like the way he seems to have too much makeup on much of the time these days. After a certain age adding more makeup actually makes you look older, not younger. Surely someone among his band members or advisers could give him some better advice

I guess we shall see.

Whoever said Jon looks tired of this, hmmm he doesnt always love doing television but i did have a slight pain in my heart when on Jimmy Fallon Richie said how they are booked to be on tour through Summer 2010 and Jon replied so disgustedly "Don't remind me"
I think he was being sarcastic. Obviously, it's going to tire them and Jon hasn't had THAT much rest, has he?

That is exactly why I think he's tired of doing all this. His kids and wife need him and he now needs them more than ever I guess.

No, it was pictures taken for SNL. There are 3 on their website:

I just got around to watching the performances this morning on my DVR. I actually had forgotten they were on Saturday night. I haven't been following this thread until after watching so WWWB was a bit of a surprise to me after Superman Tonight. I was expecting WWBTF.

I admit I fast forwarded through Superman, it looked like the same exact thing as Conan, to a nauseating degree. I like the song when listening to the Album, I can look away for a moment when he uses the "that's just my old tattoo" gag-me line...but the performances turn me off. The smiles and glances he throws the camera are all rehearsed and just drag the song down rather than focusing on performing the thing with passion to make it work....it's what always won me over on the older songs with the crafted element...the passion in the live performance.

WWWB has the status of being a song that comes from the heart for Jon and the performance here was one of those moments that reminded me why I'm still a fan. I've always felt that for all the crafted aspects of the band and their music...what always saved them was the passion put into the performance. The two songs done here constrast each other at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Thanks for the info but why is tuning down the pitch of the song necessary?

It makes it easier to hit the high notes.

I just listened to the performances from SNL. I prefer Jon's voice in the live version of WWWB than on the studio recording, but those damn "sha la las" sound awful.
