Default selling out?

The other day I was watching TV with a bunch of friends, some where rock friends and some were not, but they all were not great fans of jovi. The video for who says you cant go home came on, (btw i loathe that song), and the part where jon blews a kiss at the end came on was followed by an obvious look of emberassment by myself. One of my friends who particularily hates jovi, said 'you have to admit, that at this stage he is definately a sell out." Sadly, I had to concede that point somewhat. Someone else said that they were always a pop band, and he never claimed to be 'hardcore', so not really. I think the way he put it was 'they were always gay posers.' My question to all of you is has bon jovi sold out and/or is it possible for them to really sell out. When I think of really selling out I think of acts like Metallica in the 90's. Guns n Roses during the Illusions(in particular I am talking about the orchestra, back up singer, and grand piano on stage), Aerosmith in the Late 80's (the barrage of love/power ballads), Jewels dance album, aswell as the Mount Everest of sellouts Chris Cornells dance album. ALthough I love aerosmith and hate calling them out twice, but their superbowl half time show needs to be mentioned.

Depends what you call selling out and what you class taking advantage of an opportunity. When they did X-factor there was talk of selling out but it's the biggest music show on TV in the UK so it probably wasn't a bad idea to go on there. Is raising the price of tickets and writing about the economic crisis selling out or blatant hypocrisy? I don't know but some other bands have sold out more than Bon Jovi have, such as Metallica that you mentioned.

<< What Jim says

The stick i got way back in school for liking Jovi was ridiculous, but back then it was all a bit of a popularity contest and you had to like who was deemed ''cool'', but now when your older nobody cares.

Anyway, next time someone says ''Oh, Jovi have sold out again'', reply with something like ''Yeah, every night!''

I love Bon Jovi. Other people may or may not. I don't really give a shit what they think because I like what I like. It's really that simple.

As for whether or not Bon Jovi have "sold out", we would have to determine whether they're making music they don't like for the sake of money. If so, then I guess they've sold out. If not, then they're merely being commercially minded which they have always been.

To me there are 2 big signs of selling out (losing all musical integrity)
1.) allowing your songs to be on every nostalgic compilation album
2.) allowing your songs to be used for advertising that doesn't benefit the band.

They haven't been on a "hits of the 80's" CD and avoid that but the Duracell ads might be a bit over teh line for rule #2.

Oh god, that was so bad I completely forgot about it, I have to conclude they are sellouts, though I think the QVC was supposed to be selling tier own product.
